5205 fuel gauge does not work/register

I have a 5205 with a non working fuel gauge. Bought tractor used from original owner and it didn't work then. I assume obvious is float on in tank sending unit has ceased to exist. However, I guess it could also be the gauge unit on the dash, or a short somewhere in the system. I guess I am looking for trouble shooting suggestions to narrow it down--I don't want to go into tank and find there is no problem with the sending unit. Anyone on here replaced the sending unit in the tank--how big a job is it. I checked with JD parts and sending unit is just under $250, so want to be sure before I go to tearing into that job.

The sending unit is a long thing easy to take out. Plate thing on the bottom of the tank. It was $150 when I elected to just put an aluminum home made plate on the bottom. Went bad at like 600 hours. I could take a picture of it to prove I have one out. Not sure if there is a way to repair it. And how long the replacement might last. Deere isn't bashful about pricing things that they must know likely go bad. On further recollection mine (two separate machines) developed a leak. I probably started a thread on here asking if jb weld repair or some other tactic was worth the effort. At any rate drain the tank and take the thing out and test should not be too hard if you choose a time when the fuel is low.

I got mine and looked at it, It has a rod that has a float on it and on top of the float is a magnet. The rod must be a sensor or have a sensor inside it. My other deere tractor that the sending unit was only $75 and is behind the seat does some strange stuff between full and 3/4. That one was a sort of successful replacement it is also quite vague on the low end, the original worked properly but stopped.
