I purchased a used 5310 a little over a year ago. During freezing conditions, I found that the gear shift lever was not able to be moved. After some research here, I found that a common problem is that the rubber boot that sits on top of the casing that the gear shift lever goes through, will crack and allow water into the casing which subsequently freezes. After looking at my machine, I found that the boot was indeed cracked and probably let water into the casing.

I replaced the boot and then went after removal of the cover plate on the bottom of the gear shift casing to drain the water. After I removed all the bolts, I pried, beat, and banged on that cover plate to no avail. It just will not budge. It looks like there is some kind of sealant/glue holding the cover plate onto the casing that will not let go.

Does anybody have any experience with removing the gear shift casing cover plate that could give me any tips or tricks for getting it loose? Your help is greatly appreciated in advance. Below is a parts diagram with an arrow pointing to the cover plate.

I would remove as much water as possible (suction gun( looks like a grease gun with slear tube and pull handle) then blow it out with compressed air.

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming that you mean to come in from the top as opposed to taking the cover plate off the bottom? Is it possible to remove the shift lever, etc. from the top to get down into the shifter case?

Yes, I meant from the top. Per the drawing you posted it looks like the bottom cover needs to come off to remove the shift lever.

A friend with a 5210 had the cracked boot/water/freezing issue on his. He did not remove the cover on the bottom. He said last tractor use this winter was fine.

Did you get the plate off?

My uncle has the same issue with his 5310 due to a leaking boot on the shifter and wants me to attempt to fix it. I was wondering if you ever got the plate off and how you did it? Also, do you have to take the fender off in order to get to underneath to the plate? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
