54 inch snow blower impeller shear pin plate and impeller bolt do not align.

363 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  John Deere 1025R TLB
HI, the shear pin for the impeller broke, in attempting to install a new bolt the hex bolt plate has shifted and now will not align with the set screw plate. Key is in place and the set screws were removed. How do I realign the two plates so the shear bolt can be replaced.
Thank you

if your talking about 12 and 3, 12 should rotate freely and align with 3 without much fuss. If 12 wont move, you need to take the thing apart, get the impeller off the shaft, clean it up and apply some anti seize to it before you reinstall.

My guess is your impeller is partially seized and when you broke the key it moved under load. Now its stuck in the new position.

Be best to fix it before you cant get it off.

Thank you, 12 and 3 move freely on the shaft. Plate 3 aligns vertically. Plate 12 and the hex nut on the impeller are at 1 o'clock and will not align with plate 3. I will try to update with pic.
Thanks again
I think a picture of the "alignment problem" would be helpful.

If you can rotate the impeller and rotate the #3 plate by turning the augers on the blower, they should align with one another, unless by not aligning, you mean the holes between the two no longer will line up, regardless of position...............

Can you rotate both the impeller and the #3 plate by moving either the impeller by hand or repositioning the augers on the blower? Often, when the shear bolt breaks, they stop out of alignment because one is being driven and one is not once the bolt breaks. Of course the impeller is the main driven item with either the gear box or the chain and gears. The augers are driven by the connection of plates 3 and 12.

If you can't turn the augers on the blower, make sure something isn't wedged in the auger or that there isn't something broken in the gear box..

How did you break that shear bolt? Often, it's making contact with the augers into a solid object like a brick, piece of firewood, I even once ran a phone book through the blower and jammed it with the book binding.................

To reposition the impeller, disconnect the PTO implement shaft on the blower from the tractor's long PTO shaft and turn the implement shaft (the short shaft on the blower) by hand..........

You should be able to rotate the impeller freely to align the holes. If it doesn't rotate, something is jamming it. @SulleyBear is plate #3 supposed to be mounted as far forward as possible on the key, toward the gearbox, or back towards the impeller? I've noticed the impeller prefers to be mounted, and operate, as far rearward as possible, which seems odd because then you have less contact with key #13. I operate a 2210 with 47"FMB at our gun club and as soon as plate #3 starts sliding forward just a mm or two, it's starts eating shear bolts. I think it's because the clearance between the impeller blades and the front of the housing gets very tight. All it takes is some frozen soil or a decent piece of ice to get wedged in there and bolts start snapping.

Feel a little silly, but the impeller was just frozen to the shaft (I think). I had moved the tractor (2025R) into the garage, when I went back to take another look I was able to line everything up, installed the new shear bolt and replaced the set screws and it all operated like normal. Big thanks for the responses ! Thank you

Thanks for reporting back how you resolved the issue. It makes the thread useful for the next person with this issue. The only silly questions are the ones not asked, so don't hesitate to seek help whenever you need it.

I can't tell you how many times I have watched someone struggle to do something that I struggled with myself at one point only to learn that a little tip or method can make all of the difference.

Like greasing the ends of the splines on PTO shaft when connecting them, both the Mid PTO on the tractor, the implement to the front PTO on the snow blower and then the rear PTO shaft to the implement PTO are all the same way. I have watched people wrestle around with those only to see a small dab of grease can make the whole process much, much easier. Live and learn.................Glad to see you used GTT when you needed it and hope you stick around the site...............

If it was a little siezed (frozen) do yourself a favor and disassemble ASAP. And clean it up and coat heavily with anti sieze. A good one. Or next time you won't need to replace the shear bolt. Ever again. If you hit something, something WILL BREAK. But not the easy parts to replace.
