i have a 5500 4wd with hydraulic reverser and i believe the parking pawl has broken. my dad told me it was hard to shift into park for a couple days and would stay in gear as you tried to put it in park and before i could get the cable adjusted it suddenly got real easy to put the lever down into park but there is no park.

i was praying for a broken cable or lever but i pulled the cowl and seat off and everything looks good on the outside. so here is my stupid question im afraid already know the answer to: will it be ok for him to run it a while longer before we repair it? i can only imagine what a piece of shrapnel could do to the transmission when it finds itself in the right-wrong spot.
not having park function is a non-issue, wrecking the transmission is.

thank you in advance.

The internal linkage for park pawl pushes the pawl into the gear for park. The pawl is spring loaded to return when out of park.
I would start by pulling cover key 10. You might be able to see internal workings? (never done it). If you can see what is broken and fish it out, good until it can be repaired.
Dropping cover 14 may give access to a broken part, if you can not access through cover 10.
Park pawl is key 25

went to a dealership out of town today and talked to a couple of seasoned mechanics who said it is a common issue they have seen a lot. one said the shrapnel generally goes down to the little low spot where the transmission mates to the rear end. according to them the two little teeth of the pawl gears are what usually break off and that they are pewter and get ground up without damage to the drive gears in the event that they do get caught up. he said if i have not heard any suspicious noises so far i am in good shape and they shouldnt move out of the bottom. sounds good to me! will be taking it in for repairs this winter, hoping to stay lucky.

Not so sure I agree that the broken pieces won't cause a problem. I would drain the oil, then remove the mfwd driveshaft. Then remove the four bolts holding the mfwd drop box on. In my experience, those broken parts tend to fall down in that drop box area. You should be able to find any broken parts laying in that area. From that opening, you can also look up in the transmission and see the park mechanism to see what is broken. Of course to actually repair it , the tractor needs to be split.

I’ve gone back and forth on it. Your suggestion is my preference but I feel pretty reassured by the techs…right now.

I can't stop me.

Was recently looking at a 5 series.

It was one that was prone to this problem and had me concerned .

There was a recall..some got fixed ,some didn't.

I spent a day reading everything I could find everywhere.......Some stories did not end well.

Not sure if the other parts were damaged in the initial incident when pawl broke
OR
After the fact from driving it.

Repair is going to cost a bit just too split.......I'm sure that other components in the trans are quite expensive.

I'd make every attempt to remove loose stuff if your going to continue to use it.

Thats just me....I'm No expert...Just telling you what I've found out.

Keep us updated on this one please...I think theres another guy with same issue last week as well.

They were surprised it hadn’t broken sooner. The tractor has functioned well with few issues since we got it used in ’99. It has done nothing but logging, which is hard on a farm tractor.
I will let you all know how it turns out. Thanks for the info.
