I realize this is my first post here... Hope I don't have to do some initiation to fit in here before I start asking complicated questions! :)

I have a few John Deere tractors and love all things Deere.

730 Shift Issues

This started a while ago. You could do the trick where you move the shifter from the left and right corners and bang it in each corner and then you could shift through all the gears. Then occasionally you couldn't get it into high gear and occasionally as it would go into the 5/6 slots, it wouldn't engage when you let the clutch out.



I pulled my 3 bottom with it last year in third gear and sounded like it was going to grenade so I stopped.

Now recently I pulled it into the garage and can only shift on the right side so I pulled the cover off.



Some rust but the shifter looks good.


The forks look like they've been brazed before. Not sure about the wire...


Also when I changed the oil a small 3/8" diameter ball bearing fell out. So I'm thinking one of the shaft bearings is bad...

What should I do next?

I'm no expert by any means, but I recently rebuilt the trans in my model 60. It's not exactly the same, but pretty similar. Look at my "grandpa John" thread in the restoration forum. There's also a video showing how it works. The gear numbers aren't exactly right by the way I narrated the video, but you'll get the idea.

I would check how the shifting action works with a prybar while you have the shifter off. It's fairly hard to inspect the bearings on the countershaft and sliding gear shaft without first removing the shifter fork assemblies. You may have a bearing going out, or just too much free-play. A detailed inspection is key.

Thanks. The transmission is pretty simple and your video was helpful!

This was one of my Papa's tractors so it makes me want to fix it right!
