Hello all! Looking for some help here-what could be wrong on a 955 JD Compact when you push the PTO lever forward, and it acts like it engages but the PTO does not run and it almost kills the tractor? Is there another button or lever to push? I am trying to run the rear PTO shaft. The rear PTO shaft does not turn freely when I try to turnit by hand but the belly one does. Is there another lever to push or something? Thanks for any help!!!

WELCOME to DT Greenfarm. Kinda sounds like you need a manual. They are a great investment. Sorry, I can not answer your question, but some will come by shortly with one. Again, welcome. :thumbup1gif:

Welcome to DT...

Here is a site where you can search for owners manuals, the newer ones are online for download but unfortunately not the older tractors: http://www.deere.com/en_US/groundscare/services_support/manuals.html

There is only one switch/knob that turns the PTO OFF or ON. There is also a lever the selects the Mid, Rear, or Both PTO's.

Is this machine new to you?
Has the PTO ever worked?
What RPM's are you engaging it at?
What implement are you trying to power?

Hey thanks! I picked up a owners manual today at a parts store... This machine is new to me, but looks like it's been rolled before. The RPM gauge is broke and I don't know if the PTO has ever worked. I am just going to run a little rotary mower with it when I get it running. We'll see...:unknown:

The service manual CD's are a great thing to get also if your going to work on it yourself, they are about $70 or so and worth every penny.

I have a 1991 855. I have never experienced what you speak of, sounds like something is binding. The lever on the dashboard and the plunger safety switch under the seat are the only electrical switches and there is a PTO lever down by the floor on the left side for the PTO's front, back and middle positions.

Sounds like it could have something to to with the PTO's clutch plates. But I'm not a JD mechanic. Good luck.

Here's a thought, have you tried it without the mower hooked up? Possibly the problem is there and not the tractor?

When your front-both-rear selector is set to rear only, the front shaft should spin freely. Is the selector fully engaged? Have you tried front only? Or both?

Kennyd, I forgot to mention that we have just been trying to get the PTO to run, so it isn't hooked up. Kjung17, thanks very much, I will engage the front one only, then if everything is okay as far as the clutch and PTO brake go the rear one should spin freely when I turn it by hand. AND, if the PTO brakes or clutch are stuck, it won't. Correct?

Okay-the brakes are fine. It freewheels when just the belly PTO is engaged. There are 4 wires going to the seat saftey switch, all of them cut off with a nippers and spray painted black and green. Never mind!:gaah:

What I have found on my (1987) JD855.
If you have the lever engaged for rear PTO, the belly shaft turns by hand.
If you have the lever engaged for belly PTO, the rear shaft turns by hand.
Have only tried "both" in the "off seat" option and put a broom stick against the shafts to see that they were both indeed under power. Engine at an idle.

On my 855 the wires to the seat switch were crimped by the seat suspension.
Yellow being the common to both sides of the switch.
Blue makes the belly shaft work.
Other color makes the rear shaft work.

Just as an experiment, I twisted all three wires together. This bypassed the on or off seat safety ability, and let what ever shaft selected run as long as the dash lever was engaged.

Had to re thread the wires around the seat suspension rather than trying to snake the wires through it. There was enough slack in the harness to do this.

Good luck
Wyo
