ADVICE PLEASE!!!: Weight/Fluid in Turf Tires??

Hello all,

Got my never used/new to me turf tires yesterday. I'm just wondering what everyone's opinions are on whether or not to add fluid to the tires for weight.

My plan is to put them on for the summer months, and use my R1's for the winter. In the summer I'll be moving round bales, flail mowing, roto-tilling, spraying, "aerway-ing", spreading fertilizer, etc. No real heavy pulling. I do have a ballast box with extensions that I can put on if I'm lifting heavy with the loader.

I'd appreciate your thoughts, especially those of you that have golf course/lawn care experience.

Other than moving round bales it does not seem that you would need the weight? How do you feel about iron weight? I have 2 110's on each inside of my R1's. I need a ballast box when using the loader still, but it helps with traction and is not so heavy that it packs the ground real bad.

Your turfs shoulf be wide and would hold a lot of liquid. That would make them hard to change each year also.

I would guess that a little iron might be better?

My Filled small R4's weigh a ton, So i would imagine filled turfs would be a lot heavier feeling. :C

I like weight for ballast and lower center of gravity on the tractor. IMHO Little problem switching, but worth the effort. Ken Sweet

I personally am not a fan of filled tires since I use my tractor for so may things, mainly mowing in the summer. I feel it's better to add weight via a ballast box when it's needed.

Do you think that an extended BB full of something dense like sand is enough??

Sand? No...Portland Cement, Yes.

Same here, that is why I do not use my small R4s much, except for serious dirt work where I do not care about the surface as much as getting the job done. I do think at some point i will get my R4s filled with foam vs fluid though. I have a ballast box too.

I have issues with a light rear with 440 pounds of iron and a normal ballast box full of protland when using my bucket in damp soil. I have thought about getting the extension, but I think its over priced.

Do you have any issues with your current setup? Do you lift the rears with your current setup or feel light? Are your current tires filled?

IMHO Sand is not heavy enough.

IMHO Sand is not heavy enough.

I was OK with all but the heaviest of lifts with my extBB + tire fluid in my R1's. I'm a little leary to 'commit' to the Portland cement, but I am settled now, so the BB won't be going anywhere else. Can you buy that stuff at Home Depot?? Maybe I will do that with some PVC pipe for yard tools.

One of my recent concerns is actually the weight of the snowblade and grapple I received from Croc/Gator attachements this fall. I'm going to get myself a crane scale and weight them, but i have some suspicions that they cheaped out on the grade of steel they used. My blade makes me front noticeably front heavy, but I'm sure part of that is that my blower is really very light, feels much lighter than my flail.

Brian, the extension would be the easiest fabrication project ever for you....

Portland can be found at home depot! My normal box took 8 bags if I recall correctly. The extension I plan to make will be like Randy's. Part weight and part a tool box. I also have a bunch of metal water pipe that I plan to add to the outside for shovels and stuff. Right now I am too busy playing with my new iPad and MacBook....lol....:lol:

Jer,
Kenny already provided you with the appropriate link. I would mention however that my box is lined with cardboard and filled with bricks. The toolbox caps the top 6" with the extension.

I don't need a weight box for anything I do but suggest you could also check on Bayrite if available in your area. This is a weight material used in drilling mud, IIRC it weights about 36lbs/gallon. While it packs down in a box it is removeable if that is desired. At over 7000 lbs /cu. yd you should be able to fill your weight box appropriately and leave the turf tires unfilled.
