And this is why we don't loan tractors

Let a buddy borrow my tractor. He said he would get it fixed. I'm thinking this is new cylinder time, correct?

that almost looks like its threaded in.

Neighbor did the same to the cyl on his Cat mini ex. thursday.

$ 2000.oo......He's still in shock.

His fitting was welded on........they tried to fix but still had a pinhole.

Gotta be super clean to weld.

With luck yours is threaded and you need a $ 10. fitting

New cylinder. I have re-welded those fittings before and usually there is a pinhole that you have to drill and spot weld. The biggest problem is keeping the cylinder from going egg shape and leaking by internally.

Yep and when he sees the price he's never going to borrow it again.

The fittings are resistance welded to the tube, this is actually a very common failure so don't give him to hard of a time over it. It really is a weak spot on these loaders.

It can be cleaned up and TIG welded with great success, but you need a competent weldor to do it.

Don’t share any GFP or GPS discount codes with him either!

Did something hook (or come down on) that fitting and snap it off? Seems somewhat protected from the front so it must have been damaged from the top or bottom.

Said he was ripping limbs off a tree a one got caught in there. He's a tugboat capt and makes about $160k. He's more worried about me not having my tractor than the price.

Money aside, if the person that broke it can afford to fix it and their actual concern is not cost but loss of use to the lender, I'd happily lend that person stuff in the future. That's generally someone who "gets it" and likely runs equipment in the same manner I would. Sounds like a good friend!

Nice post Matt L. Plus one never knows when they might want to borrow a tug boat, or just go for a ride on one.

As a much younger man I loaned a few things to family and friends. Never again. Most folks treat them like they are rentals. I have offered to go with and tow or load things in trailers. Most the time they say no. I often wonder what they were going to do with my equipment. Most folks think I'm not very helpful, that's OK by me.

He asked if I could use the hydronic fluid from his boat. Said it was clear or light blue. I think I have the JD Hydroguard in it. I changed it at 500 hours and used what the dealership suggested.

Neighbor called me one time looking to rent a front bucket piece of equipment to do some yard work. I politely told him no. Thats one tool I won't lend or rent out.

I used to use my father's tractors to mow his yard or my neighbors when they were to old to do it, he wanted mine for a weekend and
I told him I would happily come do it for him, just make a list. He said, you wont let me use it? I said no. I don't want you to get hurt or break it. He has a bunch of hills and I didnt want him to think he could do the same things on Betsy he could do with his smaller tractors. Like side hill the one.

Needless to say I drove Betsy over and took care of his list and more. He told me he was glad I was doing it and not him. Mostly because he didnt know what she can do.

Looks easily enough to weld back on with a good welder.
Good luck!

This might seem like an odd thing to say but if I made 160k a year, I'd have a new 4 series cab tractor AND an open station 3046R and every dang attachment I could ever need.

Kiddin' aside, the fella does sound quite respectful of the stuff he borrows if cost is no issue with him.

I think that fitting could be easily brazed back in place. Before attempting it though I'd remove and disassemble the end cap and rod to eliminate the possibility of heat damaging the seals. Of course you'd need to know how to braze which in today's world is fast becoming a lost art.

It's not recommended to mix the Hydraulic fluids. The JD spec "HyGuard" J20C or J20D (Low Viscosity HyGuard) can be interchanged between the two JD fluids if needed, however I wouldn't add fluid that's designed for just hydraulics and not hydrostatic transmissions and definitely not fluid that doesn't meet the J20C/D spec. Cost of fluid is cheap relative to cost of transmissions and pumps, stick with the JD stuff, its just easier!

I suspect that his oil is biodegradable and considerably more expensive than HyGard. There would be no reason to mix another fluid with questionable compatibility.
