Another possible seller scam

Yesterday I became a new member of the forum and posted on the wanted to buy a need for backhoe brackets for my 4120. Today I received an official looking forum message from member Chris 07 telling me he had started a new conversation however when I clicked on the New Conversation button it didn’t take me any where. Also when I clicked on Chris 07, it said not valid member. This person said Phillip in Virginia has the brackets I need and to email Phillip in Virginia at [email protected]il.com. I have exchanged a couple emails requesting a price and photos of the brackets with no response. I had no suspicions until reading a post from another member regarding getting scammed from person in Virginia on purchasing forks for his tractor. These guys in Virginia appear to be trolling this forum for people unaware of their dishonest intentions. I don’t understand how an outsider could get access to my email to PM me with an official looking (phony) Green Tractor Talk prompt. Maybe a forum administrator can advise members how to tell fake messages to avoid being preyed upon.
Anyway thought it was important to share my experience with members and lesson learned, I should only communicate directly on the forum platform until legitimate communication can be established. I really like this forum and hope this issue can be resolved. Jim

I too happen to have item for for sale, I'm out of the country right now but will have my partner contact the item for inspections shipping's.

Thanks for realizing that not everybody in Virginia is a scammer. I do watch Virginia CL sites and there are a lot of apparent scam items on there along with legitimate offers as well.

I kinda swallowed this guys story hook, line and sinker even though I was suspicious of the New Conversation button not working. I’m glad I didn’t share any more info with them. You are correct about my Virginia reference as there are a lot of good people in Virginia including some of my relatives. I just found the post about the scam forklift fork purchase with a reference to Virginia and then my poster also referencing a guy in Virginia but as you stated, they could be located anywhere.
On a positive note, I received from another member info on an alternate part number for my 4120 backhoe brackets and my local JD dealer can get them.

When we find these scammers/spammers, we have the option to ban the member only, or to do a spam clean. The spam clean is much more thorough and records data that is used to by the software to catch more as they come. Banning only a member does not record such data. Therefore, spam cleaning these is much more beneficial to the site and allows it to track the data. One downside is what it does to PMs, as it deletes those posts.
