I have a 6 year old 990 that is on its 3rd battery. it has eaten up (corrosion) 2 positive battery terminal ends. I have added an extra ground strap straight to the engine block. does anyone else have a simular problem? any sugestions? the first time it was covered under warrenty.

Hi, Flint. I believe the 990 is one of the machines that was notorious for hard starting. The problem was solved by adding a relay to the start circuit, but I don't see how that could cause your corrosion issue. Have you checked to see if you are overcharging (more than 15 volts) at operating RPM? Have you tried using a sealer on your battery posts?

I have used sealer in the past. I have not checked charging amps, unfortunatly you have to compleatly remove the air cleaner assembly to access the battery.

I am not sure how this thread got here, my tractor is on the large end of a compact and not a sub compact. I thought I put it in the compact catagory.

thank you!
I have a 80's 955 and the battery connections are a frequent maintenance item...cleaning both the insides of the clamp, then the battery post as well...it always seems like the battery is dead, but really it's the terrible connection acting up again. I find I am cleaning these about every 6-9 months. I replaced the entire positive side clamp but I suspect that mechanical connection to the low gauge positive side wire will not last. SO I will be interested in other's observations on this issue too.
Do you use anything to protect the terminals from the environment such as grease or battery terminal protectant spray? I use either a light coat of silicone grease on regular lead acid batteries and the spray stuff on any sealed AGM batteries.:hi:
for what its worth the positive terminal rotted away last month and I had ended up putting a marine brass terminal on it. I need to find my terminal protector spray but I hope that probelem is gone for a while.
I am sorry to hear about your battery corrosion problems on your 990. When I was first looking at the used 990 I purchased I saw a number of threads on TBN of 990 users who complained about the terminals corroding. When I bought mine the original user had changed the battery. The one in it now is a CarQuest battery. I could see where the bar that holds it in has some rust on it which is a typical sign of corrosion. I just looked at mine again the other day and the posts are both corrosion free. My dad always taught me to use grease on the terminals. On the present terminals in my 990 there is no grease so I am wondering if they previous owner sprayed or applied this protective spray you all have discussed. We will see. The tractor started up fine in cold weather this past January through the rest of the winter and it was outside covered only by 2 tarps. I will continue to watch it.
