Bio ballast at Les Schwab - buyer beware

I brought in two tractor tires (26 12-12) to fill with bio ballast. Before I brought them in I weighed each of them. One was 81 lbs, the other 103 lbs. I asked them to put in as much as possible and noted that there was some ballast still in the tires.

When I called to check on them I asked how much they put in. They told me 24 gallons. When I said that my tires should only hold 10 gallons each, and they started with a couple gallons in them already, he told me that they put a whole lot in because that is what I asked for. He also told me he knew there wasn't much in them because he lifted them - I said "I weighed them". Over the phone he reduced the charge to 20 gallons.

When I got the tires home I weighed them again. One was 148 lbs, the other 158 lbs. That ends up being a total of 122 lbs of ballast that they added. At 9.7 pounds per gallon that equal 12.6 gallons total ballast that I received. I doubled checked the accuracy of my scale using another scale and it was spot on. I called and talked to the manager, the same guy that told me that they put a whole lot in, and he refunded 8 gallons worth.

I asked how they determine how much ballast they install. Apparently it is either by chart or by how much is left in their tank. They do not weigh, and it is not metered. I made mention that it should be a concern that their method is so inaccurate - he apologized but also made a comment about how he is just going by what I say the tires weigh.

If I had not weighed the tires before taking them in I wouldn't have known how much they actually put in and would have been charged for 24 gallons instead of the 12.6 gallons that I actually received.

I quit using them when I saw them using the same pump/tank for ALL tires with ballast.
It was a muddy mixed up mess recycled who knows how many times.

At one time I knew every employee and owner quite well......I know No one Now.

I could go full blown .....on the subject.

Last time I used them is when ..I got the call ..New tote of beet juice delivered , pump flushed ,get down here NOW..I did and got a unpoluted load in 8 tires.

I've since found a small shop ,spanish dude that understands and Knows up front .What I want,What I expect and yes I'm watching And will probly help.

Lester sends you to the popcorn and TV room....Lost all my bizz.

During a recent Corona purge of the office..Found all the receipts to Lester..Well over 50K of my money in a 20 yr stretch.

What! ...No free beef!!!

Les Schwab has been on the downward slide for a long time, even long before the old man started pushing up daisies.
America's Tire (now Discount Tire) got my business probably 25 years ago.

Haha, I had forgotten about that! Spend $300 on tires and get a lb of hamburger and a 2 lb chuck roast.

The Schwabs near us is actually a franchise and is way worse than the normal Schwab stores. They also do front end alignment and brakes. The running joke for years is to put a rock on top of your tire when you drop it off and it’ll still be there when you pick it up after you paid the bill.

I had an 06 Impala that had the TPMS system on it. I had nothing but trouble with it. The Chevy dealer was right next door to the Schwabs so the car went over there for new sensors in the wheels. After 5-6 attempts at getting it fixed, I finally told Chevy service I was going to take it to another tire dealer. They agreed to pay for it if they fixed the problem. When the new tire dealer broke the tires down they found that all four sensors had been broken off the valve stems when Schwabs put the tires on. They installed new sensors and I never had another problem. Chevy service paid me and sent all their future business to the other dealer.
