Why is the brake on the right side on the John Deere garden tractors?
I owned 2 JD garden tractors before getting my first JD compact tractor. Both of those had the brakes on the right. I never owned or used a garden tractor & compact tractor at the same time until recently.
A while back I bought a X475 & on a few days I was going back & forth from a 2720 & the X475. There were several times I about got in trouble when I forgot which side the brake was on.
It is not a big deal when on level ground, but my ground slopes a lot & I also work around a pond.
It became such a problem for me that when someone offered to but the X475 I sold it to them. I was at the dealer today looking at a 1026R. I saw a X740 & got to wondering why the brakes are on on the right. I really like the size of the garden tractor better than another compact, but I cannot take the chance of making a major mistake.
Has anyone else used both & had this problem?

I agree on gear drive tractors the brakes are on the right. I grew up on a farm & drove a lot of gear drive tractors.
My point is that on JD hydrostat drive compact tractors the brakes are on the left.

On the X500,520 & X534 they have a foot operated deck lift and the peddle is on the left so the brake has to go on the right. The X540 has hydralic lift, so no lift peddle, but the brake is still on the right. They would have to rework the whole platform to put it on the left. It does bother me a little but I will get use to it in time. For what is it worth the 1026R has the peddle on the left.

I also grew up with farm tractors and the brake on the right. My 318 was that way also. The 1026R is a little funny with the left side brake, but I have more issues hitting the wrong hydro peddle as apposed to missing the brake all together. Just my $.02.

All the John Deere garden tractors I've own, plus the lawn tractors also, had the brake on the right. This includes gear and hydro.

On a similar, but yet different, note, about all the mechanical lift tractors I've owned has the lift on the left side....except Cub Cadet, which had them on the right. Also, all the hydros I've owned had the motion control lever on the right.....except - Cub Cadet, which had them on the left. After driving a hydro with the lever on the right, it felt odd when I got on a Cub Cadet where it was on the left. Felt odd. I think Cub changed that arrangement in the 70s with their Quiet Line series, but up to then - their set up was odd compared to JD and Wheel Horse.
