Busted the bucket hydraulic cylinder

3540 Views 27 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Jeff B
My 1025R happened to be in the shed I dropped a tree on, with the bucket raised on the FEL, a H120 model. The tractor itself was not really damaged but it could have been a lot worse. The position the bucket was in was enough to cause the left bucket cylinder to over extend and snap the rod at the piston. I replaced the cylinder to the tune of $718 including shipping and tax, but now have a good cylinder that just needs a new rod and perhaps a piston, ut I think the piston is salvagable. Has anyone have a rod or used cylinder or a source to get a rod. JD dealer here says there no longer available. Anyone ever break a cylinder on their 1025R with H120 FEL. I assume the tree hit over extended the cylinder but can't say for sure.

Are the R120 cylinders different from the H120’s? No longer abailable?

I'm happy to measure mine - if you want to measure yours! 🤓

Edit: Seems odd they are no longer available, my H120 warranty has 23 months left. 🤔

Most hyd repair shops can weld a new rod on your end and thread it properly. Just a mildly educated guess is that would it be about $150 in my area.

I'd try a couple of other dealers. You may find someone with some 'new, old stock'. I can't believe that they aren't available anymore. The one I broke was replaced under warranty about two years ago. Failing that you can probably get one at a hydraulic shop. I don't know anything about Harbour Freight stores but I think that they are very much like our Princess Auto, or Tractor Supply stores and they have replacement hydraulic cylinders at a reasonable price. Good luck.

Why was the Bucket up?

Typicly the loader will bleed down in hours or less.

What was the timeline of parking tractor and dropping Tree?

I'd look for other damages if it ripped that in half......seems like it would have sheared a cyl mounting pin before stretching a hydro cyl into several parts. The air in the tires should have sucked up the shock load.........I'm baffleD

JD Parts seems to show it is available and GFP and GPS both show it as a valid part number.

BTW... this is the same cylinder rod that is used on the 200X, 200CX, D120, H130 and 120R loaders.

If the bucket is in a full dump position and the bucket gets pushed against the cutting edge orpushed downon the top of the bucket itcan cause the cylinder to over extend, and the rod contacts the pivot point of the loaders frame that holds the bucket. It raise it up so I could move the tractor in closer. I made a safety device that go over a hyd cylinder rod thats extended, and secured in place with a pin. Same as what is used aircraft on landing gear struts etc. No way for any cylinder to retract.

Will becalling the Deere dealer again tomorrow. I hate dealing with the local dealer for anything.

You really learned an expensive lesson. There are many posts on here dealing with extended cylinders at the stop position. Pushing a load with the curl extended is another way to damage. Good luck with the dealer, maybe attitude adjustment necessary. Best of luck.

When I bent the rod on my backhoe bucket cylinder I mistakenly ordered the one for the prior model. The only difference was a groove for an o ring where the piston goes. The piston has a relief to put the o ring where it goes on that model. So I used it anyway. I wish I had weighed them. They are exactly the same size but picking them up you can tell the older style one is heavier. I think they were made of better steel. That may be why so many new backhoes are bending rods and you never hear about it on the older ones.

You can save a bundle of money by picking up an aftermarket cylinder. I bent the bucket cyl on my JD model 48 backhoe. JD said that the cyl was $1500. I picked up an aftermarket cyl for $177. But I had to make some adjustments too. So if you don’t mind spending the money, it’s surely easier to get the JD part.
