Thinking about trying to find a cab for my 955. What all is out there for choices. And for those that have one which one would you recommend and why.

I looked once and struck out.

Drive the cub. That’s funny. Like I’d be allowed.

I just read up on these yesterday...NOoooo I don't fly ...was just curious what one was.
I thought they were a jet...Big surprize there.
So are the old ones decommissioned due to age and ya'll fly the new version or how does that werk?
Who has the Rotary motor?...the Radial one.....never understood how they could put all that in a tiny package.

More traction for the cabbed 955........we'll talk planes while we wait.

J3....when does Jr get His own account?

Many J3s are still around, but most have had some level of restoration along the way. We still have one in our family, along with a Super Cub and several antique biplanes. Newer models are the "Super Cub" with modern avionics and a more powerful engine, among other changes. The Cubs & Super Cubs have horizontally opposed "boxer" engines.
The J3s are like the VW Bugs of the airplane world. Lightweight, low HP, slow. But tons of fun :)

Are the new ones still wraped in cloth ?
or
have they skined them in alm or fiberglass....I'm guessing Fiberglass ends up heavy even if it sounds lite.
What about Carbon Fiber..is that a thing for project/experimental planes...idk.
Know very little about planes but have guttered Many Many airplane hangers at various small or private Strips........Airplane guys always have nice toys at the hangers.....motorcycles ,hot rods..etc

The Super Cubs are still skinned in fabric, but it's not the same material as the old ones. All synthetic fibers now instead of cotton/linen.
Your comments about the hangars makes me chuckle. I live on a private strip and several of my neighbors have the toys, just like you've observed.
I don't fly anymore so I don't have a hangar. Just a regular garage with a motorcycle or two, and the tractor of course.

Pretty much this. The fabric now is called Ceconite. Last a lot longer than the grade A cotton they used to use.

There are a lot of them still around. I’d say that just about all of them have had some work done.

I’d really like this exact one. But it’s not for sale.

It belonged to my great grandfather who started the local airport. Maybe someday the owner will decide to sell it to me. I’d really like to just get the change to fly it and add to the family names in the logbook.

The other one that is pictured that is flew is it’s younger sister. By one serial Number.

Sometime aviation surprises me. Even after all these years in it.

These old birds don't fall under some crazy inspection that mothballz them?
I hope theres a loophole...Did a bunch of reading on these yesterday as I had a feeling...
With everthingelse .gov has wrecked I hope you guys escaped.

I still don't get the cloth...can't you up the hp and skin with alm.?

#15 ·
There's no rule that says they have to be taken out of service due to age. Just have to pass an annual inspection each year to make sure it's still airworthy. I think the oldest plane we've had was a 1927, and most of the others are from the 30s & 40s.
You could up the HP and use metal, buy why? The fabric works fine, is just as aerodynamic and is super light weight. Metal may last longer, but even the fabric with the "dope" paint will last decades if stored inside and cared for.
And it's a lot of hoops to jump through with the FAA if you want to modify an aircraft from it's original design. Have to get an STC (supplemental type certificate), which I'm sure is lots of time, paperwork, and money to get approved. My dad has been through the process so he could get new pistons manufactured for his radial engined biplanes, but I've never asked the details on how arduous it was.

Airplanes are like a house. Can be maintained for a long time. But the older they both are the more it takes and costs.

Facinating...Now I Know.

With 5 cyl firing on one turn and 4 on the next....
Seems like some Harmonic thing would be generated .......how is that overcome ?

This is much simpler than I imagined........where is the rpm threshold for such a beast?

I just picked up a used Berco universal cab to put on my 345.....supposedly it would also fit the 955. When I take it off the 345 in the spring I'll probably test fit it on the 955.

J3 Driver,

I have the Curtis Cab on my 955. It is mostly steel, but the cowl and rear panels are leather. It is not the most weathertight cab out there but it keeps the wind off you. Has a heater, electric wiper and lights. I take it off in the summer. It is a non-ROPS cab.

the 955 I ran for the town had the Cozy Cab. All metal construction, ROPS cab. I have a Cozy Cab for my 420 that I remove in the summer, requires a fork lift.

How do you get fuel in a 955 with a cab?

#25 ·
The fuel fill sits ahead of the cab, and is exposed. I use the terra pump on a fuel can and pump fuel into the tank

#26 ·
I guess I'm not getting how it seals around hood/dash.

Hood has to flip forwards to get to tank. Hood starts at dash edge.

Do they cut the hood on some of these conversions or holesaw through the top.

#28 ·
Duke,

my hood has an opening in the hood right above the tank fill. Yours isn’t like that?

Dave

#29 ·
No Sir

I have to lift the hood to fill the tank ,check oil etc.

Thats what leads me to think that the hood needs modified for some cabs maybe.

#30 ·
I don’t recall having to open the hood on the Town’s 955 with the Cozy Cab so that is why I didn’t think anything of the one I have now. But yes, without the northern maine mod, you have to open the front windshield by flipping it up and raising the hood to access the fuel fill.
