I am looking to see if anyone has any hands on with the E120 or had compared to the other E series models?

My mother's little zero turn has died and she has decided she is just going to get an E100 to replace it. She mows about 3/4 acre and that is all she does with it. She does not like the hand and arm position of the zero turn and she is a Deere fan so she has decided on the E100. I am willing to give her the difference for the E120 if the v-twin would be better/smoother/more reliable than the single cylinder on the E100? I am not that familiar with the D/E series so also looking to see if the E120 has anything different with ergonomics, etc.

She will be getting a bagger with it as well but I believe they both use the same unit.

By the way my mother is 78 and is in incredibly great shape so she does all of this by herself, including emptying the bagger, using the trimmer, walk behind snow blower in the winter, etc. But that also means that getting her to buy a different brand is pretty much impossible! :)

Looking at the specs, the E120 has the hyrostatic tranny, where the E100 has the "automatic". I am not sure what the means, but the E100 is the only model with the automatic. I would go E120 myself just for that reason. The bigger motor is definitely a plus.

I am not sure what firemachine means by his comment that it is Deere in paint color only. Per this website (and several others), John Deere makes John Deere tractors.

JD has been using an "Automatic" transmission on some of the entry level models for a while. It's an odd beast. It has a shifter to select forward or reverse. Then there is a foot operated "travel pedal" which is used for both forward and reverse. The more you press of the pedal the faster you go. The transmission doesn't have gears, it has a sliding pulley that reminds me of a snowmobile transmission.



It does not appear like they sell any parts for the transmission internals.

She is looking at the 42” deck as her zt is only a 36” now. She got the 36” a while ago to fit through her fence gate. I think the 42” might have trouble going through the fence gate (I recall it being around 40”) but I would just build her a wider double gate to fit.

I think she would like the hydro transmission better as well so I am going to give her the money for the bump up to the E120. Thanks.

Nice of you to offer the "upgrade", but my advice is to have her test drive both and "let her decide" (or convince her she'd enjoy the E120 more). When a 78 year old parent makes up his/her mind, then it's best to follow that lead. That's where the "convincing" comes into play, but don't just force the upgrade on her.

When my dad wanted a new car (he was in his late 80's), he got his new car. He wanted a V6 instead of the 4, so he got his V6. Did he want all the bells and whistles, no, so he got a basic car with only the engine upgrade. My brothers and I discussed it and said, if he wants it he gets it, because he deserves it ... enuf said.

Now if you want to be a little "good" sneaky and YOU really want her to have the E120 and she doesn't, just have the dealer order a set of E100 decals and change them on the E120 machine you want. (NAH - just kidding :laugh:).

Just my 2 cents.

I'm not familiar with the E100's "automatic" transmission but the hydro trans that was used in the L100 and D100 machines has been their weak spot. I believe the E100s use the same Tuff Torq K46 hydro unit that the L/D100s used. Just something to keep in mind.

I believe that the K46 now only comes on the 160-170 models. Also the 100 transmission is plastic so definitely move up to the 120.

Well I didn't have to do much convincing as she drove them both and wants the D120!

I hope to have her fortitude when I reach her age!
All I can volunteer is I found a v twin very much less taxing on my body after owning one years ago. Hate those one cylinders now.
