I have a 4400 with about 1500 hours and while operating in four wheel drive there was a sudden clunk and every few feet it would clunk or click. When I took it out of four wheel drive the noise went away. It was definitely coming from the front end. I need it to finish a project so cant tear into it just yet. Any ideas what may have happened? Maybe a tooth on a gear? Thanks in advance for any help.

Put it in 2wd
jack up one front wheel at a time and spin it.
If its a gear out by the wheel you will likely "feel" it.
Inspect the driveline /u jointsas well...Driveline will spin with the wheel thats raised.

I've chipped a few teeth on the gears by the wheel..not terribly expensive but that was years ago.

Hope your problem is not in the differential as that gets quite spendy
