Does your 72D make any unusual noises?

I have been trying to decide between the 60D and 72D for a 2032R, and a salesperson at one of the dealerships said one of their customers complained of a noise from his 72D. They tried to fix it, and may have even replaced it, but the noise didn't go away. They replaced it with a 60D.

Has anyone heard of or experienced something similar?

Did they say what kind of noise? I haven’t heard anything I consider unusual. A hum and the slicing of the grass when it’s thick near the discharge chute. We started with a 60” thinking the 72” was overkill for the 5 acres we consider a yard. The 60” doesn’t have load and go brackets available so we talked them into taking it off and getting the 72” and since the load and go was part of our original order, they didn’t seem happy but did it. We love mowing with the 72” not only because it covers more ground but the left side sticks out enough to get closer to fence posts etc.

I don't recall how they described the noise. My impression is that it was something from the gearbox.

But that was one person who may have been steering me toward something they had in stock or on order vs. something they don't know when to expect.

I figured if there was a complaint someone here would have experienced it.

When I ordered my 2038R the salesman talk me out of the 72D. He said that the 72D is too wide and will scalp.

I wish I had ignored him and got the 72D. The 60D does not stick out far quite enough to mow close to things.

JD does not offer Load-N-Go for the 60D.

I have the 72D, the only odd noise I've had is from a bolt that the dealer installed backwards, causing the pto shaft to impact the bolt in certain situations. That could be the noise your dealer is describing, as it's fairly common for dealers to put that particular bolt in incorrectly.

I am very happy with my 72D on my 2038R I have about 4 acres to mow and it is my favorite time of the week. It does hum when you start it and raise the engine to pto speed. I am so use to it I can tell when I am at PTO speed by the hum.

No odd sounds with mine other than the new decks (new since after my other which is an 1982) seem to make a whine like a tooth belt. I would get the 72" again . As for the scalping or better stated more uneven cut on bumps or ridges it is worse than a 60 but the 60 is worst than a 54 or a 48". Depends on how picky you are.

That whine may be what they were warning of.

After 3 years of mowing I have just excepted it as normal like the 425.

I too am experiencing an odd loud rattle from the mower deck in certain situations. For instance on uneven terrain, bumps, and if I make a sharp turn and deck tilts. The noise isn’t all the time and is cutting fine. I can’t see anything rubbing? Thanks.

Check this bolt and if there are marks on the PTO yoke; the bolt is installed backwards on the photo, the head should be towards the PTO yoke.
