Saw this post tonight after getting in from clearing the driveway. Sad way to learn a lesson. That being said these guys did a great job with the recovery.

he was in no hurry to ride it down so as soon as his butt come off the seat it could have shut off
4R. If it is EHydro, the seat switch just stops the go pedal input - Unless the PTO was engaged. That would have killed it.
Oops... that's an expensive way to wash and full service a rig. Looks like it happened just down the "I" from me a.... wonder how thick the ice was? We've got 18+ inches of ice up this way!

Wow that was a great recovery job thanks for sharing
Heck, unless the fuel cap came off, glow plug it and start it up.:D

Even with all the water in the cylinders???:oops::unsure::unsure::rolleyes::rolleyes:😨
I would NEVER EVER take a tractor out on the ice. Too many variables. Tractor like that has a way heavier footprint than a pickup truck.

I have a small pond I have thought about clearing to make a skating rink. After seeing this, no chance.
I have a small pond I make into a skating rink for the Grandkids. It takes a lott of time to do it right but its time well spent. I wouldnt dream of doing it with my tractor.

I use My Snow Blower. if it goes under all find it in the spring!!!
They drive semi trucks and heavy equipment on the ice all the time. If you know ice conditions you should be fine. Those that go out on questionable ice are the ones that drop in.
One thing about ice is it is always thinner near earth and rocks. So if you have 2 islands near by or a bunch of just below the surface rocks the ice in that area will be much thinner then everywhere else, sometimes a great deal thinner.
Interesting to observe while reading this thread that we seem to have forgotten how to use snow shovels and brooms. Part of the skating fun with a small, frozen, shallow pond when I was a kid was the horseplay and comradery in getting it ready.

As my brothers former foreman found out 3 years ago. He had a cabin on an island. He took his new girlfriend on a snow machine ride and the ice was perfect when they left, as they returned several hours after dark he must have been coming in hot and over ran his headlights and drove into open water. Both of them drown. They didn't find their body's for a few days as it was a long weekend and neither was missed until the lady didn't report for work the following Tuesday!

I'm 10 miles northeast of Hamm Lake. In December we had cold enough weather to start freezing the lakes then it warmed up enough to rain soon after it got cold and snowed heavy insulating the lakes from making good, clear ice. Lot's of vehicles going in the drink this winter around here!

Several years ago a woman was using a Bobcat with a door kit to clear ice from a lake so her kids could skate after school. She broke through and as it had an out ward opening door and window's installed she was trapped. Her husband found the track's going onto the lake when he came home from work several hours later!

That happened on a local lake last winter here with a side by side. Old guy took his grandkid for a ride. Went through ice and couldn't open the doors. That was a sad one.

...gives 'ice-road-trucking' a whole new meaning.

My Dad told me about going ice fishing when he was young on Lake Oahe on the Missouri River. He said that as you drove forward the ice would sink so you could only see ice in the windshield and rear view mirror... :((( I've never gone ice fishing and I don't like my water more than bathtub deep. I did fall thru the ice once recovering a downed goose, I had a long branch with me and used that to hop out, the water was about chest deep.
