Hi guys

I have an old 5x10 utility trailer that was in rough shape, It was my fathers when he started out landscaping 35 years ago. As its to small for me to do much with and i have equipment haulers and a 6x12 dump i thought i would make this into a small dump trailer i could use around the yard. First i removed the floor, cut the side rails and the folding ramp off, Then removed 2' from the rear making it now 5x8. I added my top frame and hinges all is well so far.

I can't figure out a lift system. Id like to use a DC hydraulic power pack. Any dimension and suggestions as to what some guys have used would be extremely helpful!

Attached are 2 photos of where its at now as well as a lift mechanism I've seen but don't really know where to start.

I would suggest you go look at your 6x12 dump to get a visualization ..

the dump mechanizum itself is really simple in itself...it goes from 0 to ??? height....since max lift height is a fuction of the lift you adust the dump angle by mounting the lift forwards or backwards from your hinge point to create more or less desired lift angle......(simple math) ...look at your 6x12 dump and decide if you want more, less or the same dump angle and do the math...obviously where the lift attaches it pivots during the lifting process so you mount it with round rod mounts so it can pivot

more critical is the design of the framing where the lift attaches to both base frame and dump frame its real easy to make a weak point and must transfer all that lifting weight back out to the frame rails

again i would suggest looking closely at your other trailer......or going to a trailer dealer and looking at their trailers and take pictures etc for reference

You tube show a lot of DIY dump trailer builds. Some are much better than others....:greentractorride:

Also, a quick internet search turned up several companies who sell dump trailer plans. Costs money for plans but at least you get a product with drawings and measurements which will at least eliminate the design work for you so you can work on the build.

I built the Dump Bed and Hydraulic system for my Power Wagon

I built the complete dump bed and hydraulic system for my 48 Power Wagon. First one I ever did but it worked great and could handle any load the hydraulics could push up on. I did a Uni-Body set up on the Bed Frame and Bed. I bolted the bed body together and bolted it to the welded/bolted frame. Can't believe how many holes I had to drill to put it together!!! You will need to beef up your cylinder mount quite a bit as the push can be in the 1,000s of pounds to get it to start to go up. I used 2 cylinders to even the load up and added a safety leg to hold it up when working on it. In the beginning I used air to work it till I got my angles right then put the hydraulic dual action pump on. Here are some pictures of it and the Hinge and I made the bed out of 3/16" steel plate I had the angles bent in the plate steel for me so I could bolt it together. I have a lot of steel in mine but I wanted it to lift a couple tone with no problems. The hinges were made out of Pillow Block Bearings and the Pull Ring Hooks off a 1953 M37 Military Truck since they could hold the truck dropped out of a aircraft using parachutes! The Tail Gate was the touch it needed to finish it with a New Bling Chrome Dodge Emblem on it.

Personally I would use 2 cylinders and move them to the sides like I did and not have them in the way of my axle going up and down. It will make the lift stronger and more even for your light weight frame. You can do it like mine or come up with another idea? You won't be happy with where/how the center cylinder is mounted.

JD4044 I’ve seen a few posts on your wagon or wagons. Those are badass! I’d love a flat deck to haul equipment on. Im still in the market for a 50-60s era Chevy 1 ton or greater but I’ll get that after my 5 series ha!

Today’s progress was slowed buy a visitor and a case of beer. I added some doors, brackets on the top will have a 2x6 bolted to them as they take abuse better than a nice steel edge.

Originally I tried mounting a single cylinder to the main frame and the tilting deck but I had many issues with it binding or “pushing” the frame. With the size of trailer and stroke needed I would have to mount the cylinder very low, for my intended use I was worried that the cylinder would catch on something.

My Brimar trailer has the single mount cylinder (not sure or bore or stroke) but the frame on the trailer is very deep and everything is well protected.

I ended up find some plans on the scissor style lift. I roughed it up today and moved it up and down and it’s very smooth. I also think I will get more angle with a smaller 10” stroke vs the mounted cylinder. From reading the scissor actually adds a great lift capacity as well.

Nothing attached to the frame yet but here is where it stands.

Add a simple welded on truss under the Hydraulic Lift to beef it up more. Nothing more then some strap steel and a couple short pieces welded on to it. Those short angles take a lot of force to push up a trailer bed with.

Why is the scissor mechanism so wide? :dunno: Being that wide,, the round pins will bend easily. :flag_of_truce:

Narrow the scissor so that there is only about an inch of clearance on each side of the cylinder,,,:bigthumb:

This was the trial stage. I have yet to add the power pack and I’m just running off the skidsteer to test it out. Yes I bent them first push. I’ve since added more mounting brackets. No photos yet as I wanted to get other parts finished off. Floor is in and sides are tacked on

You need to either:

1. Make a copy of someone else's design
2. Buy a plan that is known to work
3. Do some engineering

The third option is not so difficult in that it is all linear math, but it is non-trivial if you don't remember trigonometry or understand force vectors.

The design JD4044 used is one of the simplest ones to perform the calculations. You're going to need to calculate, for a given position of the cylinders, how much lift you get for a given amount to ram extension and how much force is required to lift a full load.

If you look at a large dump truck, they typically use a telescoping ram located at the front and the needed extension is easy to calculate from the desired dump angle. Similarly, the force required is easy to calculate - 1/2 the weight of the dump body and load.
