Hi everyone. For some reason the engine block heater on my 1025r stopped working. I checked all the obvious stuff - power cord, connection to the tractor engine... One thing I noticed when it was working is that the area around the engine where the plug attached would get very hot - so much so I couldn't keep my finger on it. I thought that was normal. Now that it is dead, I'm wondering if it shouldn't have gotten that hot. Maybe it fried itself. Thoughts?

Got a Volt/Ohm meter? If so use it to check the continuity of the cord and the heater separately. Possibly the there was a loos connection that the heater, and the heat made the cord side go open-if your lucky the heater element is still good.

Check the resistance of the heater and the cord and the heater. They should be about the same, if they are not then you more than likely have a bad cord or connector. If you have infinite resistance on he heater it is bad. If you want to check if it is shorted then plug your numbers into the following. Watts = (volts x volts) divided by resistance in ohms. Watts should be the size of the heater and voltage should be 120v.

Thanks, guys. I'll have to go out and buy a Volt/Ohm meter. Always wanted one...

Does anybody know how hot the side of the engine normally gets with these heaters? Should it just be warm to the touch or so hot you can't keep your finger on it?

My heater becomes hot to the touch after a few minutes. I plugged it in 5 minutes ago and just checked it. I cannot hold my finger on the heater body longer than a few seconds.

I show 34 ohms, which puts the heater at just about 400 watts. (I forgot to check voltage and used 117)

Thanks, OxPath for doing this for me. That makes me feel better. Not only was I concerned that mine overheated and fried, but that the heat may have damaged something in the engine.

I may just call the dealer since it is under warranty and let them fix it...

I can't see it doing any damage to the engine. The volume of the coolant should be enough to disperse the heat from a block heater that is malfunctioning and over heating.

Damage to anything in the engine compartment is extremely unlikely. The block gets a lot hotter during normal operation than any heater could produce. Your circuit breaker would likely trip before reaching that point.
