It's not a tractor but my first green yard tool.

I bought a JS26 walk behind mower today, can't wait to try it. Question, I want to really look after it and maintain it, can I wash it
with a hose after each use? Or will this lead to problems. I'm so impressed with the quality, the deck is so solid compared to my
last non JD.

Congrats and welcome to the green family! :thumbup1gif: You do know that is a "gateway" mower and that you will soon be using a full sized JD farm tractor, right? :lol: As far as cleaning, I would recommend using an air compressor with a blow gun to clean it. I suppose you could hose it down every so often, but the water will probably just make wet pockets of grass here and there and you risk getting the engine wet in some manner.

Welcome GG. I know a lot of guys here use compressed air to blow the crud off their mowing equipment. If you use water like I do, make sure the engine has cooled down so you don't introduce a nasty thermal shock to the castings.

I use water because compressed air won't get the claycrete dust off my rider like water will.

Thank you for the recommendations. Wouldn't you just know it rained last night and this morning, but it will give me a chance to put a nice coat of wax on it before using. :laugh:

I would suggest you run it for a while after you wash it off so the heat evaporates any moisture when you put it away.

I use my leaf blower at times to blow trash off my mowers.

I don't know for sure but I also would be careful not to hit the gas cap with a direct blast of water from the hose, you may be able to force water through the vent in the cap. Same goes for hydraulic reservoirs. Very nice mower you have there. :good2:

Erik is right. Owning John Deere equipment is like eating potato chips. Once you start, you can't stop. I have a John Deere push mower that I use for trimming. I have had it for more than 25 years. It still starts on the second pull every time, even after setting all winter.

Well I finally had a chance to use it and was amazed. It took a bit of getting to know it cause its my first propelled machine but man was it ever easy to use. It took me less time to mow and it did both my front and back yard in one tank of gas. My old lawn mower he'd about the same fuel but took 2 tanks to do the yard. Such a good purchase, very happy I spent the extra money.:thumbup1gif:

Air compressor is what I use most. I used to use the garden hose alot more in the past, but in the long term water is bad because it will eventually lead to rust, etc.
Just blow off the big stuff, and occassionally wipe it off with your favorite product and a rag to keep it looking new!

I have the JS60 and it is a very good mower and I'm sure yours will be too. And like Don said, it starts easily. Even though it's 15 years old, it will start almost every time on the first pull. Always on the second pull.

It's important to clean the outside but surprising to me, no one mentioned cleaning the underside of the mower. That is where the life of your mower deck is affected most. If you allow grass clipping to stay under the deck the moisture they contain will cause rust to develop and shorten the life of your mower. I always lift my mower up, remove the plug wire if you want to play it a little safer, and scrape the grass clippings from underneath. I spray it down with a water hose after that and park it till next time.
