Had a big storm here last weekend. Went out during it to try and clear a path for a short while but the snow was blowing too hard to see so I put the tractor back in the garage.
Next am went to start the tractor (JD 316 1985). No starter sound just flames and smoke comming from under the hood. Looks like the coil, regulator, and all associated wires are completely burned up. Looks like maybe a major short happened in the coil?
So I am writing to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I have downloaded manuals and will embark on replacing everything but sure would like to know what caused this to begin with.
Damn lucky I didn't burn the garage down.

I will see if I can find pictures but basically my 430 had a similar thing happen.
Saw sparks coming from behind the pto and shut it off.
The field winding was melted.Once they short out who knows what happens.
Should blow a fuse but mine did not either.
Yours was most likely sparking but you did not see it.
