Hey guys so I finally got my first tractor. It’s a JD 790 with a back hoe. I got it from a friend for free since they had repaired the transmission and messed it up bad . When I got it, it had been sitting in storage after that repair was attempted 10 years ago. They split the tractor and replaced a shift fork. When putting the transmission back together it wasn’t mating together right so they forced it back together. After starting it first gear immediately ground away and reverse was only partially engaging. So I got her and split it , found the bad gears but I’m having trouble telling if the shift forks are bad. They have light grooving on the sides where they make contact and one has blueing on it form heat. I can get pics in the mean time should the sides always be smooth ? Or is slight wear in the sides normal?

First off, Welcome to GTT.

I would not use the forks as of your explanation of it's condition. Replacing the shifter fork is the best option at this time.

Enjoy the forums.
