Last night we had a flash flood firehose event .....i had a 5105m tractor with a MOCO out in the hay field ......the field flooded......the tractor was exposed...

water line on tractor is around the top step of the entry steps......looks like it may have gotten very close to the oil dipstick and close to the oil fill ....seems to have been just below the fuel filler cap.....doesnt appear to have gotten to the hydraulic dipstick or fill lines .....i will change oil in field before trying to start ...anymore suggestions and thoughts ......flooded the moco too so a grease'n
is in order for sure

Ttazzman, sorry to hear about this. I would also check your front end differential as well as the hubs. Drain the oil and refill once it’s running again.

When I bought mine at 900 hours, I dropped all the oils and one hub had some milky oil in it. I have checked since and all is fine.

I think for peace of mind I would change the Hydraulic fluid as well. Cheap insurance so the system does not get contaminated.

I would do the following:

  • Change the oil in the MFWD hubs.
  • Change the hydraulic oil.
  • Change the engine oil.
  • Open the drains on the fuel tank and fuel filter/water separator and let any water that may be in there out.
  • Grease all of the zerks on the machine.
  • Let everything dry out for several days so that any water that may be puddled around any of the electrical controllers can dry up.

Don't forget the gear boxes on the implement, if they were submerged or near that level in the water......Obviously, the tractor is the main concern but the implement also likely needs some attention.........

Update......changed the oil in the field......no water in the oil......looked around underneath no wires ......lowest wires or connectors i could find on the tractor that would have been near the waterline was starter solinoid wires....and water sensor wires on the fuel water seperator ...all were in good shape.....looked like the water line was partially on the starter ......

did a startup after oil change .....let it idle......observed the clear water seperator bowl for any water (none) .....let it get hot........no warning lights etc.......idled it back to the barn to service the cutter.....greased all cutter grease points.......all gear boxes were far above the water lines ....

to do.....check front hubs.....check hydraulic oil......change moco cutter bar oil

all seems good, litterally less than 4" of water height to disaster imho

Glad you didn't lose the machine. Do you carry insurance on your equipment?

As a former road equipment mechanic, if it was mine I would check all fluid levels and if they are not over filled I would crank it and run it, if any are over fill I would assume water entered and it needs changed out, take a flash light and look in the fuel tank if the is water in it you should be able to see it, if your unsure then I would siphon fuel out of the tank hold the hose to the bottom, it will pull water out, I have done this on job sites before to get equipment back up and running.
