Free standing shelf advice

So floor space is at a premium around here in the shed. So I got a brainstorm of an idea. I would like to build a shelf that will be about 5 feet off the ground. 8 feet wide and about 5-6 deep. I would like to store my rough cut mower on this. Rc2060 weighs about 600lbs.
here’s where my dilemma starts. I was going to use 2x10s doubled up on the face and the back of the shelf. Then I was going to add a some 2x6s Pairell with these. I was all fine with that then I looked and 2x12 are only like .60 more. But when I look at them they all had a lot of cracks in them to start where as the 2x10 did not. I would think a 2x12 would be stronger but not sure any more

Have you considered using a section of pallet rack instead?
Have you considered using a section of pallet rack instead?
Honestly I think that would be better. It’s just not readily available near me. Without spending 1000.
You'll be halfway there with the lumber and it won't be adjustable.

There's usually lots of pallet racking for sale. Check Craigslist, etc.

I would also suggest Craigslist and search for it. Most major and many smaller cities have dealers that have used. I know around here I could go to Rockford, Madison, Chicago or Milwaukee to find it and probably the Quad Cities or Peoria.

I just bought 3 8’ sections of pallet racking. 8’ tall. So it has 6 racks/shelves fo a little more than 1G new (with wire racks). You can buy it used or new from a lot of places. And have it delivered for extra. Or go pick it up and save some dough. Craigslist does list a lot of it in my state/area. I ended up going through a co called MHE in Indy.

edit - the stuff I got can hold 5000 lbs each shelf. You can get a little lighter weight racking that holds 4000 lbs a shelf too.

Thanks guys. I may of found some in the Minneapolis area. It’s a few hours drive. Waiting on email. I also found some at Menards that holds 2000 per shelf. That does not sound bad either. Extreme garage I think it was called. It was 77 wide 72 high and 30 deep. I would need two of these side by side. But it’s all still looking better than building one.
