Front Mud Flaps Added

This project was inspired by Greg, (user GLC) from this thread about adding fenders to his 2520: http://www.greentractortalk.com/forums/sub-compacts/2264-front-fenders-2520-a.html
Then Chris mentioned using mud flaps instead in post #70, so I have been looking for something that would work especially with winter coming.

I was in TSC the other day and saw these-I thought they where just the ticket, John Deere logo, Made in USA, and only $7.99 each:

They where a little big at 16 3/4 wide by 13 3/4 tall, so I cut the width down to 14", then cut the lower corners to a 2" radius:

I used some 1" aluminum angle and 1" flat bar-both 1/8" thick to make the holders. The angle was cut to 16", the flat bar to 14":

Holes laid out and center-punched, then the two pieces of flat bar where stacked and drilled with a 13/64" drill bit. After de-burring the holes, I laid them on the angle as a template and drilled those holes. Finally the flat bar was clamped over the flaps and those holes where drilled as well:

Final assembly was completed with ten #10x3/4" machine bolts and blue Loctite #242, I also slotted the ends (yes I know they are ugly slots but its not permanent) with a 5/32" drill bit and a file for the temporary mounting straps:

To the tractor:

I used these heavy straps to attach these to the loader support arm. If I decide they work good for snow, water and grass/pebbles when the MMM is mounted, I will cut off the extra 1" of angle on each side, then drill and tap the underside of the loader support arms to 1/4"-20 to mount the permanently so they can be left on with the FEL as well.

After plowing snow today, then driving up the very wet street in high gear to the neighbors I can say for sure they work fantastic! Before I would get sprayed with water from the tires, but the new flaps caught probably 80% of it. I hope they work for the grass as well, come on spring!

Nice job Kenny! :drinks: I may have to do the same for my tractor. :thumbup1gif:

Sounds like the conception of the Second Division of the Kenny Bolt-On Hook Corporation is about to be born! Nice Work, as always! ~Scotty
Heck of an idea there Ken! I really like that.:good2:
I lost interest in my project because of the mounting bracket dilemma. Yours is so much simpler too. I may have to rethink the whole idea.
Slick idea!! I have always wanted front fenders on my 2520. Stinks they dont offer them. SLKPK got the X Series and put them on his 2305 and they really look great. I may get some of those for my 2305 this spring or summer. Still want to do something on the 2520 though.
I like that. My tires throw stuff all over the side cab windows. I wonder if my loader is too far back to do this.....
That is a GREAT idea!!!!:thumbup1gif:

Just wondering how the mud flaps are working out
Nothing short of fabulous! Thanks for bringing this thread up and reminding me that I've never updated it :thumbup1gif:

Winter: Spray from the from tires is reduced to almost zero accept when traveling at full speed, which is rare for me. My feet and the floorboards used to get sprayed with slush and water.

Summer: The MMM is at least 50% cleaner after mowing, a lot less grass and small fine stone (my yard is full of shale) on the deck now to blow off.

They are still mounted with the heavy straps since the day those pictures where taken, I have yet to drill/tap for permanent mounts, but it's on the to-do list.

All in all, well worth it IMHO:dance: :yahoo:

Kenny,I was all set to do the mud flap thing, until I realized our loader frame brackets are different. You got me thinking about those fenders again!:)

I am sure with your master fabrication skills you can figure out a bracket to hold some flaps
Do you have any pictures with your deck and or loader on????

Thank you, Looks nice and dirty just like mine.
After I saw your pose last winter I made some out of stainless steel but have to remove them for spring/summer.
Maybe I'll combine both versions this fall when time permits.

I really like this idea. I'm going to put this on my "I want to get around to doing this sooner rather than later" list.

Great job guys.:drinks:

I've been thinking about the mud flaps and really wish I had done this before last winter.

My quick couplers on my 2720 really took a beating from the salt from the road I had to travel to do a driveway up the street. The couplers function OK but the coating on them deteriorated and are beginning to rust.

I think mine would also benefit from a set of mud flaps mounted to the front of the rear fenders.

I need some help with the rear portions of the rear fenders since I get a good bit of spray from rear tires onto the operator(me) when driving thru the slush.

I know a cab would be great but my garage door openings won't permit that.
