Garden 2023

Continuing the tradition....

The Christmas freeze wiped out many of my winter crops, despite heavy row covers on brassicas. Our low was 15F on 12/23/22. The soil got dry enough to clean out the dead plants on 1/1. Today I thinned the turnips, rutabagas, beets and radishes I replanted last week. My second onion order from Dixondale arrived over the weekend, but the soil needs to dry more before re-building my beds. Maybe this Thursday? The first onions and garlic struggled a little from the freeze, but I think they will make it.

Jiffy cells arrive tomorrow. I have pepper and tomato seeds ready to start in the green house. I am still shooting to transplant on March 1. Seed potatoes are promised later this month. They will go in the ground as soon as they arrive.

Major changes planned this year, including experiments with woven row cover, drip tape irrigation and doubling the size of my garden. Wish me luck!

I have some changes planned as well. Keep us posted.
@jumpin - where are you located that you can plant this early?

And, welcome to GTT!

Only thing we're planting this time of year is snow peas! 😏

2022 hasn’t quite ended for me yet. I’m still digging some nice carrots that I have under little hoop houses.

Mark, growing on the Texas mid-coast. Zone 9(b). Where are you planting?

Thanks for the welcome. Long time lurker; decided it was time to register.

I have most of my seed on hand, need to find a dozen plastic barrels to make more raised beds before spring.

Wanted to start a garden this past fall, but ran out of time and too many other projects still in flight, but I WILL get one started this spring.

I have a 4' wide garden strip behind the shop that has too many tree roots in it. My solution is a "barrel garden", picked up a dozen plastic barrels this morning. I'll cut them in half, drill drain holes in the sides a couple of inches above the bottom, fill the bottom 6-8" inches with well aged coarse sawdust & the garden soil the rest of the way.

I used some of these for potatoes last year with very good results:

Planted my tomato, pepper and eggplant seeds last weekend in Jiffy cells. I'm shooting for a transplant date in mid to late February. I might need row cover a couple of weeks if a cold snap is forecast.

Some cauliflower is trying to recover from the 12/23 freeze. The broccoli seems less likely to come back. Fortunately I had some transplants I planned to succession plant so I may still get a late winter harvest.

I got two feed/protein tubs from a local stockman, similar to GrnSpot's barrels. I plan to plant citrus trees in them. I built a pallet / platform to facilitate moving to protection when the inevitable freezes come. I am tired of losing orange, lemon, satsumas, grapefruit, etc trees to freezing weather every few years.

I'll still need to put wood chip between them to control weed growth.

Cool season harvest going on. Some salad turnips, beets and carrots also. Most of the warm season crops are planted, but some are still in the greenhouse. I'm getting farther and farther behind and it's only February!

I ran the subsoiler through the garden New Years day. Helps with the drainage in our typically wet springs.

Medium and hot Jalapenos as well as Bell peppers. Also started some Broccoli, Cauliflower and Brussles Sprouts but not many. Going to get them out early in the new raised beds. To get a single meal out of them would be a win.

I'll start the tomatoes Saturday. I'm going to try two sets of tomatoes this year started 2-3 weeks apart to see if we can extend our harvest. Corn and beans will go in the ground as soon as it's warm enough.

Looking forward to another garden year.

I feel the same way. Where are you located? Started my tomatoes and peppers mid Jan & they're doing well. Tomatoes plants are going to be huge when it's time to put them in the ground in a month or so. Started my herbs and marigolds about a week ago & so far, so good. Haven't checked to see if any of the radishes outside are ready. Lettuce hasn't done well there this year.

This is the last of the 2022 carrots. The previous batch I dug were good, but a couple of them were getting a tad chewy in the core. Mrs. CP said she didn’t notice. I ordered this years seeds yesterday.
