Gauge wheel pin replacement question?

Hello all!
Back story, I bent the the right front gauge wheel bracket on my 54D Autoconnect deck. I straightened it back out easy enough, but to prevent this from happening in the future, I have welded a 3/8 cold rolled steel rod between the front and rear gauge wheel bracket, similar to the alignment rod on the left side of the deck. Now I am getting ready to paint it up and make it look right and I am trying to figure the locking pin out. It looks like I just drive the roll pin out inside the bracket that holds the spring in and pull the flip up handle and rod out. That’s easy enough. Heres my conundrum. I was fiddling with it today and that little spring appears to have more tension in it than you would think. I do not want to take it apart and end up scratching my head with how to reassemble it. I am 99% sure I could get it back together, but I have seen little things like this cause me heartache for HOURS. So before disassembly, I figured I would stop here and see if there is a trick or if I am over thinking it? Also, I have performed a fair amount of googling and have not found any info on this. Thanks in advance for any info!

They are a pain to put back in ,,, IMO.. I did the same as you welded a rod like you and painted. Instead of removing the pin and spring... I taped over the spring and the handle. I looked at this way it is a mower .,, yes I want to look nice but mowing along side the road , or your neighbor house., More than likely they will never notice that it isn't paper in a small area or a little paint is on the pin or spring.
Just my 2 cents.

After some thinking, I decided to take your advice and just mask them off. After all. It is just a mower deck. Thanks for the input!
