I've been working on this 62C deck, i'm thinking of changing the oil in the gear box. This is a older 62C deck, it looks like there is a lid that is pressed into the top of the gear box. The newer 62C decks have 4 screws on top of the gearbox. Are you supposed to pop the lid out, then unscrew the side nut to let the oil out?
Thanks,
KC1

My 62C is a 2006 vintage. I remove the gearbox and dump the oil out the side fill plug. I believe that top lid you are referring to is the top of the bearing race. I wouldn’t mess with that. Kind of a pain, but not something you need to do very often at least. I’ve changed mine 2 times in 15 years

I’m not familiar with the gearbox you have but to change oil in gearboxes without a drain plug just put some tubing in through the fill hole and use a big syringe or a pump like what’s on liquid soap to just suck or pump the old stuff out. No lifting and no mess.

Same here. I use a vacuum fluid extractor with the smallest wand / hose inserted into the bottom of the gearcase through the fill port to remove the fluid. Then refill with 75-90 GL5 synthetic gear oil. I do this annually and consider it good practice.

I just did my 54" and I removed the Gearbox and dumped the oil out of the fill plug. Mounted it back on and squeezed oil in till it spills out the fill. It looked like it had teflon on the threads, but I went with Permatex thread sealer. 54540.
