This subject has been referred to recently in one of the other threads, and to refrain from de-railing that thread I thought it would be worthy of it's own thread.

How long before it has it get moved to the politics forum?

1 hour? 1 day? 1 week?

:lolol:

I personally believe the climate is changing, but disagree that us mere mortals can effect that change-we just have to learn to adapt to it. The climate has changed many times over the lifespan of this planet, and our industrial revolution is but a tiny fraction of that lifespan.

I'm of the opinion that climates are cyclical and that man's activity has very little measurable effect on it.

This statement is usually followed by someone who disagrees with me pontificating about how I have no regard for the environment.
This is not true at all. One can hold my belief and still want to reduce pollution.

I am what I would call a "low hanging fruit" kind of guy, meaning that I always default to the available efforts which yield the most results with the least investment.
I get frustrated when people want to skip the easy "base hits" and "swing for the fence" spending huge amounts of efforts/dollars and netting little to zero results. That is simply illogical.

Those who disagree with me also frequently use "the children" & "the future" as arguments, implying that if you aren't willing to agree with them you do not care about the children & the future. I prefer dialogue to the name calling & hysteria.

I considered posting it there, but really it should be a discussion independent of political leanings, and I assumed more people would participate here.
(I try not to go to the political section because I occasionally lack the restraint to moderate my responses!)

I agree completely with Kenny. Is the climate changing? Of course it is, that is impossible to deny. It has always been changing, one way or another over the last several million years.
What really grinds my gears regarding this topic is the NIMBYism. People cry and scream for environmentally-friendly ways of doing things. Wind farms, solar energy, etc. However, don’t you dare try to put a wind tower somewhere that they can see it. For example, the Cape Wind project that was supposed to put ~150 turbines out in Nantucket Sound. Per a wiki article, it could have offset a million tons of carbon dioxide every year, and could have produced enough electricity to offset the consumption of 113,000,000 gallons of oil-per year! People complained that the turbines, which would have been about 5 miles from shore, which would have ruined their scenic views.

What tickles me you always hear from the gloom and doom crackpots on the MSM, but never hear from actual scientist
who study the sun, the main driver of our climate.

The recent lack of sunspots during this cycle and probably the next cycle could mean we're headed for a Maunder type
minimum (little ice age) and there ain't a dang thing we can do about it except try to survive like in the past.

The second biggest driver (IMHO) is the amount of volcanism going on anywhere on earth, another thing we ain't got any
control of.

The amount of stuff humans spew into the atmosphere is nothing compared to what a couple of volcanos popping off can do.

An then you got the errant asteroid that comes bopping along every so many millions of years that could really ruin our day,
just ask the dinosaurs.

Any who, just my 2 cents.

Agree with OC. There are some things we can control and others we can't control. The civilized and intelligent humans should mitigate what they know is contributing to the problem and prevent future blunders that will worsen the problem. I can live with cow farts !

The sensationalized "if you don't fix it now, the world will explode in 11 months" mentality is what burns my biscuit. There is a lot of evidence that global warming has occurred in the past 100 years, and that greenhouse gases (specifically CO2) are higher now than the past, but I also think "100 years" is a minute speck in the history of the Earth, and 100, 200, or more years from now when we've transitioned to a fully emissions-free energy production and distribution method, it will revert back to natural levels.

I like that "low hanging fruit" approach as well. In my conspiracy fueled brain, I honestly think the petroleum industry is at the center of alternative energy suppression, and the Government is getting it's pockets lined to support it. Technology like hydrogen gas turbines and fuel cells coupled with high efficiency electric motors are literally getting the shaft because there's a lot of companies and business supporting that $3/gallon pump price.

Of Course the climate is changing, always has and will continue.

Is man responsible? No
Does man contribute? Maybe, if so its so small its of little concern.

When discussing this there are some interesting questions that don't get answered.

What is the climate (temperature) supposed to be?
Of course nobody can answer that as it has changed dramatically from the time of the dinosaurs to the ice age to now.

Since the Digital Camera was made affordable I have had one living here. I can look at the last 25 years of winter pictures and pretty much all look the same around the same time each year? I am so glad it is not the Ice Age anymore and if it warms up a couple more degrees here in the winter not sure it going from 10 degrees to 12 degrees is that big a deal. Now if it goes up 70 degrees summer is really going to suck when it comes around! I do remember a bad winter it was 1996 been nice since that one happen so is this Global Warming if so I like it! 100_2969.JPG 100_2970.JPG Last year in Feb I would go from zero on the gravel to over 4 ft deep drifts over night to open up? This is why I wanted to try out a snow blower. Took a long time to move all this snow while wondering about Global Warming?

I thought that was when we ran out of Gas and I had to wait in Odd and Even Day lines to get some for my 67VW Beetle. Had two gas tanks in it I could fill up. VWBUGEANK.jpg 2nd one was behind the back seat and a Dodge Charger Flip Top Gas Cap on the side to fill it. Loved that Bug till I rolled it down a hill at about 45 MPH but I lived as Subaru owners would say after wrecking there car on TV ads?

There is always a way to get things done if you don't have much money! Man those were the days building a Cabin using my VW to get all the materials up to the 6,000 ft level out of Bakersfield Ca. 60 mile drive too! People.jpg Can you imagine living here? I have a hard time dealing with lots of people after Nam?

The current CA fires (now an annual event) have put more than a years worth of carbon/CO2 emissions into the air greater than the emissions output of a years worth of auto emissions from CA car exhaust. Yet, the CA gestapo leaders want to ban the use of fossil fuel vehicles.

The past Gov. of CA, Jerry (Leftover pot & LSD user) from the 60's vetoed a bill passed by the CA legislature to allow the power companies to go in a clear the forest floor & clear cut the infringing trees & branches away from power lines & transformers, which would prevent or limit many of the fires. But no asks WHY the hell he vetoed the bill or as they call it a Proposition. And now the current Gov. blames the power companies. What balls!

Jerry Brown made his money in the oil business. The current Gov. of CA along with his father (I believe) made their millions in the oil business wheeling & dealing in the Getty oil business. I guess it's ok for them to have their wealth hidden away where they can enjoy the stench of oil soaked dollars, but the rest of us deplorable stupid peon morons can rot on the vine.

Global warming...who the hell cares. Iran is getting ready to insure the total destruction of the world with nuclear war & no on really is paying attention to it. And speaking for myself only here, every single one of them in the congress, the senate & the WH, can all go to hell with themselves. We have lost our sons, daughters, mothers & fathers in these stupid wars just so we can have our domestic dictators from both sides crap all over us & we accept it.

I'm not a fan of Tulsi Gabbard, but I am so proud of her the other day when she put that moron loudmouth-Joyless Bahar in her place. How dare she insult Gabbard by telling her she is not a Patriot & she is a political traitor & on & on. Gabbard has been in war & is a Major. That slug Bahar, never has done anything for America. I'm truly disgusted with these socialist/communist Hollywood humps who trash the people who have really tried to do something for the good of the country. I was no fan of the late JFK, but I bet that if he could see what we've become, he would jump back in his grave & put the eternal flame out.

I will always be an American first. Screw all this stupid party garbage. We are killing our country & everyone should be flaming angry about it & let their respective gestapo officials know it.

It's funny how many posts I've already started to type only to backspace because I veered into political opinion!
It's like everything bleeds into politics sooner or later!

Actually, there hasn't been any "global warming" in near 20 years, depending on whose numbers you believe. That is why the econazis ceased referring to it as "global warming" and now label it "climate change". My issue with the econazis is they implore "junk science". It is based on very little fact, mostly supposition and conjecture. When the measurements don't produce the intended results, they either "adjust" the measurements or change the projection algorithm to produce the desired results.

As early as 1989 we were give "ten years of existence left"
Well, they simply kept moving the goal posts and repeated the same lies and continue to do so today.
30 years later and nothing that any of those prognosticators have predicted has ever happened.

im not against solar or wind but don't think they are the answer either, both types have to be backed by natural gas plants since they have such low capacity factors. on the other hand I do agree we need to limit our coal plants and build more nuclear plants. yes I said it, its crazy how much the media has fear mongered people over nuclear power. three mile island basically shut down the construction on more plants in the US which is crazy cause if you actually look at the facts its the one nuclear tragedy that showed the plant operated as it was designed to prevent radiation release when the unit melted down. Look at france who gets 80% of its power from nuclear and they have some of the lowest electrical prices in Europe. there was a documentary that came out in 2013 that I think more people should have seen. it was actually produced by anti nuclear activists that have changed their mind on the subject and think they do a good job showing both sides of it.

here is the trailer for it:
Pandoras Promise - Official Trailer [HD] - YouTube

the full movie is also available on youtube and also believe its on Netflix or amazon I believe.

No politics from me but I agree with Kenny and the rest. We must be mindful and aware of our footprint but in the end the climate on this plant will continue to cycle as it has for millions of years.

:hide: i hope this doesn't get the ban hammer--it is funny how someone else brings a subject up to discuss it-and i had watched something just like that on tv. so here goes.

Thursday night the weather channel had a special on save the world 2020. now this has some politics in it-as the weathermen and women was interviewing all the candidates for the up coming election for the president. anyone watch it:dunno:

the weather channel claims the ice caps are melting -causing havoc to the coastal cities--boston is bracing for waves up to 13 ft to higher. other cities they claim will just be wiped off the map, according to them scientists.

these scientists wanted to know if the federal government would help those cities then:dunno:

jeepers i thought as i watched it--boy they are pretty brave asking for all this money before anything even happens.:nunu:

just wanted to ask if anyone seen the program on it.

i do believe OC's belief on the all the volcanoes that erupt and cause our jet streams to get out of wack then. just my 2cts too.

great thread by the way--great info to learn something.:munch:
