I am trying to keep the goathead/puncture vine from getting established. I have been hoeing them before they sprout seeds, but I have to go out every few days. I want to spray them with a herbicide, but I don't want kill the grass. Will something like 2,4 d kill the goathead/puncture vine and spare the grass?
I'm not familiar with that vine so the best bet is to check the label on line. Usually 2,4,d won't hurt grasses when used at the recommended rates but the label will give you the best information.
Your local Cooperative Extension agent can probably give you some options as well. Some vines are tough to kill as they have either a shiny leaf for a fuzzy leaf that makes it hard for herbicides to make good contact so the right sticker might be as important as the herbicide.
I've had good luck with 2,4,D Amine not killing grasses. Works on the variety of goat head living in my driveway. I've also started spraying Garlon 4, but it's a bit harsh on some grasses. 2,4,D was not getting the job done on mesquite and pseudo acacia type brush. Time will tell how it does.
