First off I have to say this forum has already educated me a great deal on everything from attachments to tractor sizes/types/traits. After reviewing the information you guys have posted I settled on something in the small to mid compact size (4100, 4110, 2520, etc) and when a coworker mentioned his 2012 2520 was being listed for sale with 181 hours I jumped at it. When he delivered it the tractor looked almost like new, except for a few scratches on bucket and backhoe teeth... I won't hold those against him. :laugh: I got tractor, 53" bucket and loader, 46 backhoe, box blade, and a set of JDQA forks. Only thing left for me to get is maybe a tooth bar? :unknown:

Anyway down to the question: When I am operating the tractor I noticed its a little finicky to get the hydrostatic trans to go into low range. I can get it into high 100% of the time but getting it into low sometimes takes a push of the lever, a tap of the forward or reverse pedal, then another tap on the lever auto get it into gear. Also its easy to get into "low range" right when I start it but it seems like if I am driving it then stop and try to switch into low its more finicky. Sometimes it'll go right in and sometimes it won't. Are these known for being finicky? I test drove another 2520 before picking this one up and it did the same thing, albeit it was a lot older (2008 I think).

my 2006 2520 kinda does the same thing. like tonight i started it to drive out of the garage-reverse--i pretty much have to play with the foot pedals to line the gears up. nothing hard or gear grinding like that--just a small tap of the pedals.

mine has almost 1,200 hrs on it now. its almost 2nd nature to me by now.

Same here on a 2009 2320 with 180 hrs. You will definitely want some teeth on that bucket.

First, congrats on the new tractor, looks like a great buy.

Second, it's not a "toy" If you refer to it as such then people (spouse) will think you are playing and enjoying the seat time and thus keep you from it.
If you call it a "tool" then it is involved in work, which is less than pleasurable, and people will leave you to your "work" alone. :laugh:

To your issue. I have a 2320, and mine is like that sometimes too...

As has been mentioned in other threads on the subject here on various tractors, the gears in the hydro trans are “straight cut”, this is apparently done for strength and durability but does sometimes make getting them to like up and engage touchy as you describe-it takes just what you are doing, a tap of a hydro pedal or rocking the machine back and forth a bit and then you’re off and running. Absolutely nothing to be concerned over or unusual at all.

both my 2305 and ex3200 (Yanmar/Cub Cadet) will do that sometimes, just have to hit pedals to convince them they have work to do.....

They can be finicky getting them in gear. I have a 2009 2520 and it is the same way. Sometimes it's neutral to low, and sometimes it's neutral to high. But either way, a little foot pressure on either go pedal while engaging the hydro lever always works!:good2:

Completely normal. Been that way for years, and to this day still is.
Great machine and backhoe.

Thanks fella's for all the info! Based on my one test drive of another 2520 I figured it was expected but just thought I'd double check. If the rain holds out I'll get my first chance at using the backhoe this weekend to dig out a garden post that I believe is cemented in place... never thought I'd be this excited to do "work" out back! haha

Yes that was the way I first tried to switch gears each time. I’d say 75% of the time it works but the other 25% I have to tap the hydrostatic pedal then it snaps the lever a smudge further forward and right into gear. No grinding or other bad noises or feelings when this happened it just seems almost like the gear shift lever doesn’t quite push linkage far enough sometimes or, as it was stated above, maybe it’s meshing of something in transmission when gears or other mechanical components don’t quite line up at every instance.
