Hi,

I'm comparing the grass Groomer to the roller Striping kit for my 54HC deck (BUC10610). Anyone have any experience with this roller or the Groomer? I'm a bit confused about when I do and do not want to stripe with the roller. What's different about the deck setting? Do I have to adjust blade heights?

Thanks

Jeff

When you want to stripe with the roller you set it all the way down. It is meant to handle the weight of the deck. When you don’t want to stripe you raise the roller up and keep that same height under the roller has if the gauge wheels were still in place.

Thanks. Do I have to adjust the roller via the gauge wheel pins? When would I NOT want to stripe? I'm thinking through how often this would need to be changed up or down

Thanks. That's what I'm wondering. Do people who have this installed basically just keep it down to the ground all the time? In what instances would it need to be raised?
If you are mowing lawn that is worthy of striping then I wouldn't see much reason to raise it regularly.

If you are mowing something this is "grass covered dirt" you may want to raise the roller so it doesn't take such a rough ride. There are so areas I mow regularly that have rocks that would kill that roller if it was dragging bon the ground, but I can otherwise mow right over them without issues.

I leave my striping attachments down all the time. With this style of roller from Deere there basically doing the same thing Simplicity has been doing with there decks.

OK. Now I'm more confused. What I'm reading says "JOHN DEERE ATTACHMENTS ROLLER STRIPING KIT, 54HC INCH (070001 - )".

If I'm reading my attached serial number correctly, my deck is numbered 54190. Does this mean I'm out of luck? Anyway to find out WHY it's incompatible, if so?

Thanks

Yes, the last 6 digits indicates build order (and model year).
They also offer one for the earlier s/n's.

Found the parts list you need to make the roller work on your deck.

For 54 HC Mower Deck
QuantityPart numberDescription
2AM148156Yoke
2M177536Locking pin
2M177537Handle
2M112219Spring
234H251Roll pin
234M7125Roll pin

Thanks... what are these parts for? Why would I need to adapt the wheels if I'm removing them to put on the roller? MY pins are already the 1/4" increments. I found this on MTF - which doesn't apply to me since my SN is 54000+ "Model year 2017 and newer (serial number 050,001-) mower decks require no additional parts."

Well I guess you don’t need the extra parts I listed. If your deck 2017 or newer serial number above 050,001 which it is all you need is part BUC10610. I know the part book shows a higher serial number for the kit. If your 54HC deck has this style of gauge wheels I don’t see why the roller won’t work on your deck.

Sorry I just saw this. I have the grass groomer on my 60".The problem is that it will not lower down enough for Tall Fescue. I mow at 3.75" or 4" and it will not do much good. If I get down to 3.25 it does OK. I am looking into the roller as well. I may have a. grass groomer for sale soon.
