I have an old STX 38 John Deere lawn tractor (yellow deck) At the end of last year it broke down - while mowing pushed the clutch in, tractor stopped and black smoke came out. Any thoughts on where i can get an old tractor serviced? Also probably looking for a good estimate as it might not be cost effective to get it fixed at this point.

You should find small engine repair shops in your area, some are license and some are independent and work out of their own garage. And JD dealers who sell lawn and garden equipment can repair it also.

You might be able to diagnosis it your self. You say it pushed in the clutch and it stopped and black smoke came out. Where was the black smoke? Will it start, crank or turn over? Is it engine related or maybe a spindle locked up or a pulley killing the engine? A lot more information will be helpful so guys here can help you try and pinpoint the problem.
