I’ve got either a ‘77 or ‘78 model 2040. Can I use 303 in it or does it have to have J20c?

Today there is no hyd oil that meets the old 303 spec's. Original 303 contained Sperm Whale oil which use has been outlawed many yrs ago by US govt.

Model 2040 has wet disk brakes that need hyd oil with spec's of J20C which 303 doesn't meet. It's your tractor but my JD 4255 receives hyd oil that meets J20C specs.

You're welcome. I've heard stories of some brand of sealed buckets of 303 labeled oil containing water.

2040 Tech Manual states hyd oil capacity for below serial # 266,749 is 7.9 gal & above serial # 266,750 is 9.5 gal. It's difficult to get all the hyd oil drained from hyd pumps, control valves & lines so oil required should be a little less than listed.

You have been most helpful. Two more questions. Do the hydraulics have to be bled after changing and if so, where do I bleed it at?

No, they will "self bleed"
