Seems my tractor has a hydraulic leak. a line from the AWS steering header/controller thingamajigger. All the line meet here and the steering wheel. It has what looks like a plate holding the lines in. Is it as straight forward as it looks "remove the plate and pop the bad line out and replace"? and can this be done with out replaceing several others? If I have missed any glaring issues, please help.

My experience was that it isn't quite that easy. Taking off the fender deck will give you better access. The biggest difficulty is having enough room for your hands & tools. I would recommend replacing all the "o" rings as long as you have the bracket off (they aren't expensive). Replacing the "o" rings stopped my leak, but may not be true in your case. Good luck. no, not my case the line in question has a crack and is spraying fluid. Still trying to determine if this is something I want to do or pay the shop to fix. I usually break several things fixing 1, but hate when I just get home with my stuff from the shop and something else goes wrong.

It will depend on which line is leaking. You need to remove the plate that is held in place by 4 bolts. The Allen head screw in the middle holds the steering valve to the frame. There is a seal on the tip of each line that you will need when you replace the line. I should have a set of all of the lines. Just let me know which one you need.

I recently had a 425 that I was going to part out because the engine had a bad PLASTIC camgear. As I took it apart, I found the tractor was in very good shape and decided to restore it. I then needed to reinstall the steering valve and ALL of the lines. On the PITA scale of 1-10 this was a 11.5. I had the tractor down to the frame with the engine removed. Some of the lines will be possible and some others are extremely difficult. A dealer will be quite expensive.

Getting the line disconneted was pretty straight forward. However getting the line out, is another story. almost fell over when the stealer quoted the price. Going to stop at Tool Supply store today and see if they can make a hose. Another person at the parts counter mentioned "brazing". What you guys think, This line has failed once is the whole line supect now?

Maybe a little bit nit-picky, but you shouldn't have "GT" in the model number - it should just be "425". There are some John Deere garden tractors that have "GT" in their model number, i.e. GT262, GT275, GT235, etc. These were smaller machines and didn't have the features nor the capabilities of your 425. The correct number is "425".
