I have a JD 260 Kawasaki FC540V, no idea what hours it has on it, but I notice sometimes that when I shut her down I hear this grinding spinning noise from the front for a couple of seconds after the engine is off. The PTO works great never had any issues with it. Is it on its way out, is it serviceable, or do I have to get a new one? I'd rather do it now while it's nice and warm, and not 15 below and 6" in the driveway:laugh:

When the pto is disengaged, either by the pto switch or turning the key off, the armature...the part that attaches to the pulley... moves away from the rotor...the part attached to the crankshaft... and "rubs" for a few seconds against the housing, acting as a brake. The noise you hear is the normal braking action and nothing to get concerned about. You can verify that it has a "brake" by trying to rotate the pto pulley with the engine off. It may rotate some, but should be difficult. Bob

There's only a couple of places that "wear out" on the clutch: The mating surfaces, the bearing in the pulley, and the coil.

Dismantling the entire pto from the engine, you can do a visual check on the mating surfaces and then spin the pulley and listen for noises in the bearing. Any wiggle in the pulley is also an indication the bearing is going or is gone!

For the coil, get an ohm reading: disconnect wire from pto switch, put ohm meter on wire and other lead to ground. 3.5 to 4 ohms is good, less than 3.5 is going bad and 2.5 or lower and coil probably isn't working at all!

I'm not sure of EXACT air gap spec, but I believe it should be around .017/.018". Keep air gap correct and you'll be good for quite a few years. Bob

As Bob said, the gap on the clutch should be checked with a feeler gauge and kept in tolerance.:bigthumb:
