New to the site, I have a 1975 JD 401-C Backhoe and I am experancing problems with the hydraulics, mainly the stearing and the loader. Some times I get a clattering noise upfront. and then the loader bucket will shutter or the steering wheel will shake and sorta freeze up.
Checked the hyd oil level at the cap on the right side kinda under the seat, and all is showing full. is the pump up front getting ready to go out ? or needs rebuilt? adjusted?
anyone have a clue?
My local JD dealer says that they are not a construction dealer and cant help.

Thanks!

Sorry for taking so long to get to this, but have a little time tonight and thought I would clean the screen and get the filter out .

But looking at the Thumbnail you supplied. my hoe is not like that.
I took the foot board off and I have a valve or some sort of body bolted to the side of the trans case under the dipstick. it has three lines coming out of it.
1 steel line that Ts into the accumilator and gos up to the front rotory pump. another rubber line going up to the loader control valve. and another rubber line heading out to the back for the hoe.

on the back of this valve (end facing the hoe) looks like a cap that might house a screen. "BUT NOT SURE" don't want something to fly apart.
I am stuck.

The transmission screen is in the location shown. You may have to move the valve a bit to get to it.
The screen is located behind fitting #2. See image below.

Well I must say Thanks to All, I finaly found the screen and changed the filters.
the screen was abot 3/4 pluged.( only one thing guy's! none of you told me how messy this was going to be! My My.hyd oil head to toe!)

installed the new filters and cleaned the screen, went ahead and drained the rest of the tranny. fresh Hyd oil, and changed the crankcase also.

Ol girl fired right up,adjusted the oil levels.
Pump is alot quiter than before, the jitters are gone from the loader.
am realy impressed on how much quicker everything works.

was telling the wife that I can't wait to dig with it, she gave me the LOOK! seems since I got this thing the yard has not been safe. lol

Thanks Steve!
