JD 445 Coolant Issue

1168 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  BobH
I have a 445 that got hot. I’m waiting on a new coolant sensor to come. I flushed out the radiator. Refilled and started the tractor. Sitting in the garage running half throttle all seems fine. As soon as I engage the mower putting a load on the engine, the coolant fills the overflow and blows our reclaim tank. I took out the thermostat also. Any thoughts on this? Anyone else ever experience this? Thanks, Bob H.

Sounds like you may have a leaking head gasket. Engine load causes compression leakage to displace coolant.

Thanks for your input. It is very much appreciated. I was thinking along those lines also. Figure when it got hot I may have blown a head gasket. Hopefully not a cracked head. Time to get the tools out😀
I would start with the left head, seems to be the most problematic. In my case, I just changed both head gaskets even though I could see the definite failure in the left gasket. Right gasket looked good when removed. Be careful when reinstalling the intake manifold gaskets, people have been known to install them backwards and fill the engine with coolant.

You are right and I would hate to lose mine. If I did, I would have to look for another one or a 455 to replace it. It would be a hard sell for an X7xx and anything lower would not be an option unless it was liquid cooled. I would never own another air cooled tractor.

I have a 2016 1025R TLB also but I still use the 445 often. I had an X749 diesel with full time 4 wheel drive. I traded it on the 1025R. The X749 kept digging up the grass going around trees with that full time 4 wheel drive. The 455 would be great too👍
