I want to repair the brakes on the JD 520 tractor that I have. I got stumped right off the bat. The brake drums are larger in diameter than those on my JD 50. Therefore when I remove the retaining brake shaft nut, I cannot remove the brake drum off the brake shoes, due to not enough room to do so. Do I have to remove the whole shaft and brake assembly and then remove the brake drum? See attached pic.

Thanks to all repliers

I watched the entire Steiner tractor video on the JD 520 brake assembly repair. I could not have gotten a better answer to my inquiry than that. I'm grateful to you fellows for getting me going in the right direction. I will do the procedure like what I saw on the video.
This tractor site is so helpful to every JD tractor owner. Everyone is so good to help other tractor enthusiasts. Thanks to gbnpp05 & Tx Jim
Thank You
