OK, I'm new to this forum stuff, so here goes. We've got an older JD 3830 Swather with a 16' 300A Twin Knife Auger platform head. The problem we're having is: The R.H. Knife head is constantly breaking right next to the bearing housing. I breaks in the same spot every time. For the most part we've gone through everything including knife heads, knife sections, and guards. We've adjusted clearances, ground leading edges on the auger, and installed new strippers behind the auger. We've been told this is the problem and that's the problem, but nothing seems to work. Whether we're cutting thick or light alfalfa, standing or downed, the knife head still breaks; maybe not immediately, but eventually it breaks. When we picked up the swather (used)a couple years ago, it just sickled through the fields with no problems, but lately it's one knife head after another. The way it's breaking, you'd think that the sickle bar is getting hung-up on something as the Knife Drive Arm is pulling the bar rather than pushing. Seems like since the problem has developed we've slowed down the ground speed, thinking that we were pushing too much against the sickle bar. Maybe that wasn't the thing to do.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to GTT
Ditto on checking wobble box & cutterbar pin. Does pin have any wear? Does knife head have bush or needle brg? Are you utilizing correct pin?

Thx

:wgtt:

I would probably start by checking the wobble box and the pins, make sure nothing is cracked anywhere. Does the sickle move smoothly by hand?

What part of the state are you in? Not too many of us here. :bye:
Powell. Some restriction in sickle movement, but no different than the other side that doesn't break. Thanks for the reply.

Using the 2B pin w/needle brg that came with the unit. Pin seems to be in good shape. Every new knife head has a new brg. Wobble box seems to run smooth when turning the pulley. Thanks for the reply.
