Hoping to buy a 317 and swap in a magnum 18, but they're impossible to find so currently planning to put a kohler k321 from a cub cadet in. Would everything work with it? I know that I'd have to make an adapter or something for the driveshaft, but I'll be fine. Hopefully everything will go without a hitch!

You may find the PTO end of the crankshaft to be a larger diameter than the KT17 Kohler as usd by JD. If so, the electric clutch won't fit. The choke and throttle cables will probably be too short. I suspect the engine mounts would also be way different. I've never done this swap, but I don't think it will be as easy as we would hope it to be. Keep us posted on your progress.

I think the choke and throttle cables are the same length on a kt17 and a magnum, they're pretty much the same engine. It should be a bolt in swap for a 317 because again, same engine, similar block.

I think the only difference is that the series I has points and splash lube, and the series II pressure lube, and the magnums have Pressure lube and magneto ignition.

So all I'd really have to do is put in the magnum, put an adapter on, and send it!

Sorry about the mis-information. I was thinking single cylinder with the K321 number. So, this is the number for an 18HP Magnum twin?
If the PTO end of the crank is 1.000" like the KT17, you should have not have much to do to make it work. Don't forget about the differences in the ignition switch. Don't want to destroy the electronic ignition!

When I mentioned the k321 I was talking about a single cylinder but then quickly the idea of swapping that in fell apart.

Now I want to do a magnum 18 swap in. I think what I'll do is rewire it 90% of the way, aka rearrange the wires to make it neater.

Been thinking about it and I might just go pick up a set of briggs opposed twins. One runs but needs a fuel pump and the other is for parts.

Got a lead on a few things, a speedex, a 317, and a motor for my little tractor. Hoping to pick them up but with the impending snow looks like that's going to be held off till sunday.
The 317 is in good shape, it has a 314 hood on it, and the grille support's been hacked up. The motor is there but it threw a rod about 30 years ago and is definitely junk. The dual hydraulics will be nice.

The speedex is acutally a large one, probably a 1632 or a 1630. It was restored a few years ago but the guy died. Wife is trying to sell it for 1500 but her caretaker only wants like 100$ for it. He wants it to go to someone who'll take care of it.

The motor is a Kohler k181, with the pulley for a starter gen, missing the generator. Perfect to set up my headlights.

Need a generator? I have one that was on my 63, but I needed a shorter one for the tin to fit. 63 and early 64’s were different from 64-67.

I do not have the corresponding bracket for the belt cover to fit. I couldn’tfind a 63 bracket so I shortened the one I have.
