I went to mow my grass yesterday and got about 3/4 of it done on my 325 and all of a sudden the mower kicked off so when I kicked it back on I noticed that it didn’t sound right and when I looked at the pullys on the deck they wasnt spinning very fast at full throttle like normal but after about 30 seconds they got up to speed and I continued mowing but made it about 50 feet and the bogged down to barely spinning again. It’s like they got a spool up for a minute before they will run like normal and they don’t stay on long. I cleaned the deck the belts are all good I think so I’m thinking it’s maybe the pot clutch maybe? Has anybody had this problem or can maybe help me out on what it might be?

Assuming that the belts are properly tensioned, it sure sounds like a pto issue. You can start by checking the connections, resistance of the PTO and making sure that it's getting 12v.

If it spins up to speed eventually I think it’s a belt problem.

If the pto can pull in it will give direct drive to the mower, no matter how big the airgap or how weak the coil. The hard part for the coil is the pull, not the hold, and when hold fails it fully disengages.


Edit: there is a key that may have sheared.

Ya it don’t fully disengage because the pulleys on the deck are still turning there just really slow and then if I sit for 45 seconds it’ll spill back up and I can cut 30 more footish. Where would the key that could have sheared be located at cause that may be it. i Hope anyways

It’s in the engine side of the pto rotor. Removing the pto will expose it.
