I have posted this else where and have yet to get picture proof that one exists. JD 4040 serial # 001299R. Open station, 8 speed powershift, with hfwd. It was purchased new in the fall of '77. Not even JD can tell me if another one exists. BTS1.jpg

I don't recall ever seeing another.

What's your opinion on the hydraulic front wheel assist?

That is one of a kind. The forward dash covers are missing.

Didn't they use a European engine in those?

I may be wrong, but I think the early 4040's used Waterloo engines and the later 4040's used Dubuque engines.

No. Dubuque.
But, the one in the pic has a Waterloo engine(404).
Thanks
Not sure where I got that idea.
I was sure (wrongly so) that Deere did not use the 404 in the. 4030 & 4040.
That 404 was such a great engine!

It's great if you want to get stuck. It's alright, sucks power. We don't even use it now except for an emergency. One side needs rebuilt and blows oil out of relief valve if left on to long.

The 4030 used a 329 Dubuque engine, 4040 used waterloo 404 and the 4050 is the one that could have had 3 different possibilities, Waterloo 466 naturally aspirated, 466 turbo, or Dubuque 359 turbo.

The 4040 built in Waterloo used a 404 cid engine. It was available with Synchro-Range, Quad-Range, Power Shift (8 speed) or Creeper transmission. The 404 was also used in the 4230, 4430 and 4630. The late 4020's also used a 404. The 404 engine was a Waterloo built engine. It sounds better than any music I ever heard. I can't help on the power assist front axle.

There was also a Manheim built 4040 that used the 359 cid turbo-charged engine.

I agree with what Don stated that 4040 built for European sales had 359 cid engine while 4040 built for N American sales had 404 cid engine
