Good Morning All-
I am new to the site, so I apologize if this is a repost, however I am looking for some insight into an issue with my '97 JD 425. The tractor starts fine and runs well. PTO ( with 60" deck) will engage and operate for about 5-10 minutes, however after that the entire tractor stalls (PTO and Engine). if I can catch it quick enough and disengage the PTO in time, the engine wont stall out. If the engine does stall, I have to choke the tractor a bit ( even if it is warm) and it will start back up. I took the deck off the machine and drove it around with the PTO engaged and no implement. it seemed to operate fine like this. I have gone through the deck, everything seems to be spinning freely and nothing appears to be bent or miss-aligned.

Tractor Specs-

1310 HRS
Kawasaki 20HP engine, serviced regularly
60" deck

Things I have already tried

fuel filter
plugs
time delay module
serviced/ cleaned deck/ changed out blades

Could this have to do with PTO solenoid/ Module/ Switch?? could it be the seat switch??

any help would be appreciated

thanks
Don

Welcome from northeastern Pennsylvania.

Have you checked the safety switch under the seat for a bad connection or possibly a bad switch? I have replaced one on my 445 over 18 or 19 years.

Edit: I just noticed that you mentioned the seat switch.

Sounds like it's starving for fuel. Try loosening the fuel cap when it starts to struggle like that next time and listen for a muffled 'woosh' as air is let into the tank. If it does this, you need to clean the vent in your cap.

dieselshadow probably has a better idea than mine. You can check the seat switch by unhooking the connector and putting a jumper in temporarily.

Also, do you use an additive in your fuel to counteract the effects of ethanol?

Suggestion regarding ethanol, I always use premium fuel as there is no ethanol included, and since I've stayed with premium fuel, my 425 hasn't run better......Small insurance for better performance.

Wish I could get that premium/no ethanol deal around here. E. Pa.

Thanks all!!

Update- I have checked/ cleaned the vent on gas cap, seems to be fine. I only run ethanol free fuel in the tractor aswell.

seat switch is on order and once it is here it will be installed. it seems like something simple for sure. hopefully it will be a 10 dollar part :bigthumb:
