You'll be surprised just how much your lawn will turn around and thicken up after a couple of years with aeration, some seed and a little fertilizer. I aerate 2 times a year and fertilize twice with 3 month time release.

What type grass do you have? What fertilizer do you use? How often do you mow during the high grow months?

I have a mix of Kentucky blue and tall fescue.
I ues Lesco fertilizer from Siteone. Cost a little more but I only put it down twice a year, mid May and mid August. I have 4 neighbors that have a company do it 4 times in the season and their lawn doesn't look any better. They don't aerate either.
Spring it's about every 4-5 days Summer about every 7-8 days and fall once a week. The amount of rain is a factor too.

This is good information! I planted a small patch of zoysia this summer and it started growing. That’s it that you see in the grass photo. I’m hoping it will take over eventually. I will probably till up anther section and plant more next summer.

It took about 4-5 years to try different things that I learned on youtube videos. I have a plan that works for my type of soil, grass, and weather. It's simple and cheap due to only putting the Fertilizer down twice a year.
Due a soil test too, take small samples from several areas in your lawn to get an idea what you have in the ground and will help with fertilizer choice to help your lawn.

What time of year do you feel is best to aerate. I am located in South Dakota. Thanks.
Most will say in the fall. I'm in Western NY I don't do the aerate, seed and fert in September. Here's why, a old farmer told me that you seed when the farmers plant their hay/alfalfa seed. They are not going to spend all that money for it to not take or make it through the winter. So for my area that's August. We get a frost generally around 3rd week of October. This gives the new seed about 8-10 weeks and a couple of mowings before the cold hits. With the 3 month time release fert I use it's winding down feeding the lawn by mid October.
If your just aerate late August very early September. Some advise against doing it in the spring but that's mostly for if your putting down pre emergent.

I will get with my local extension agent and get some soil samples to send off.
