My Grandfather was a Millwright and Machinist at a large textile mill and he had a lot of experience repairing cast iron. He would only braze cast iron after preheating the parts. I witnessed a number of difficult repairs on large parts that went back into service after being brazed.

I have a large 8" bench vice that must have been used by someone as an anvil and the main frame was broken. My Grandfather brazed it back together over 60 years ago and it's still in service!
