We currently have a Gator 4x2 (gas) that we use to run up and down our 1/2 mile gravel driveway to take out the trash, pick up mail, etc. Parts of the drive are very steep and the Gator is painfully slow to climb hills, and with no rear suspension and no front brakes it can be hairy coming down the hill. We're considering upgrading to something a little more capable, but can't afford a new one. We already have diesel on site for the tractors so we want to go with a diesel Gator to eliminate the need to store gasoline. It must have front brakes and suspension on all wheels. 4x4 would be a plus but is not a requirement. I'm finding HPX 4x4 diesel and an XUV 850D. What is the difference between these two models? It looks like the HPX has a straight axle and the XUV has independent rear, is that the only difference? Are there any others that I should be searching for? What is the top speed on these, and do they climb hills without slowing to a crawl like the 4x2?

You hit the nail on the head about the difference in suspension. There is very little difference in the XUV and HPX.

Both diesels will do about 30mph and depending the hill, they will slow, but a crawl would have to be a pretty good hill.

I am pretty sure both models have low range, I know the XUV does as I had an 850D. I now have the new 855D with power steering.

I had a 6x4 gas, which I upgraded to the 4x2 gas for maneuverability. When the HPX diesel came out, it offered a lot more speed, way better suspension and of course the diesel was overall a lot more powerful. The biggest selling feature for me though, 4x4 was standard. The newer models don't seem to have as big of improvements, at least for what I do, the only thing I wish it had was power steering, but I can suffice for now.

Brian pretty much covered the differences. There are a couple style improvements, and the XUV does 30MPH, instead of 25MPH, but overall they are roughly the same thing. I use my HPX all the time, and although there are no huge hills I have to tackle constantly, it's handled everyone I've tried with ease.

I'd buy which ever one you can find a better deal on. You'll be glad you upgraded to either, I know I am:good2:

Thanks guys. Do all of the HPX and XUV have 4x4, or was it an option? I've got my eye on an HPX 4x4 diesel. The asking price seems very reasonable, but we're still not sure if we want to spend so much on what is really a toy. We don't do anything with the gator that we can't do with the pick-up truck, so it's tough to justify $6-8k for one. Still trying to decide.

4x4 was standard on all. They are expensive, but I've found mine to pay for itself, of course we might be doing different things, but I get as much use out of my gator than my tractors.

After several weeks of looking at what's available in the used market, we decided that the diesel was limiting our choices too much. Sticking with a gas engine opened up a lot more options. We ended up with a 2006 Polaris Ranger 500 EFI 4x4. There are a few things I don't like about it, but it's vastly better than the 4X2 Gator. I imagine an HPX or XUV gator would have been a similar upgrade, but we just couldn't find one within our budget. The Polaris seemed to be the best value and so far we are happy with it.

Yes, the Ranger has a real truck style tailgate, unlike the weird latch arrangement on the old Gator. It also has tie-down points in the corners of the box, and stake pockets all around. The 500 with 30 hp has more than enough power and speed, and it just floats over bumps where the Gator would be bouncing us out of the seats at half the speed. It really is a different class of machine. Our biggest gripe about the Ranger is the parking brake location, it's a pedal to the right of the accelerator, so you have to take your foot off the brake and swing your leg over the accelerator to apply the parking brake. It's awkward and unsafe. I'll probably adapt a hand brake from a newer Ranger.

After some coaxing from a friend, we we got it stuck in mud. When I was younger I would have thought this was fun. The dog seemed to be enjoying it.

Hey now, whaddaya mean??? When you were younger? Getting a little mud action in with a UTV is always fun! :laugh:

I wish I still had a good area to run one because I am dying for an excuse to pick one up. I had a 1987 Banshee I got rid of a good 15 years ago because I don't have any good trails or open area where I live now to use it. A friend has a RZR and that thing is a monster.
