Looking for help with 755 PTO problem

11352 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Dallas
Hello,

hope someone here can help. My buddy Little Joe has a 755 and he's been having a problem with the electric PTO. When he engages the PTO to mow it drains the battery even though the meter shows proper charge rate. Without the PTO it will run all day and the battery is fine. What part of the forum should I go to?

Welcome to GTT!

Dallas, I'm going to move this to sub compact tractors. I think you'll get good responses from the members there.:thumbup1gif:
Welcome to GTT!

I am confused...the 755 has a mechanically operated PTO:

This is a 755 Compact tractor correct?

Can you give us some more info please?

That's what I though Kenny! I was too lazy too do the research and didn't want to look silly posting mis-information, though.

I am very curious about your problem though. I don't see how using the PTO should drain the battery in any way. A little more details would help us figure it out though:good2:

Sorry, should have been more clear. The PTO is engaged by a solenoid. not mechanically. The solenoid tests OK (as far as we can tell). The problem of the battery being drained only occurs when the PTO (and solenoid) is engaged while mowing.

The safety switch that was on the seat as been bypassed and I wonder if this could be part of the problem.

Thanks, Dallas

Did you do this as an aftermarket option? I don't believe the 755 had a electronically engaged PTO of any kind. Pictures would be very helpful.
Are you sure of the model number?
Reasonably sure but I could be wrong. Certain about the problem though. You are certainly knowledgeable about the make so if something doesn't seem right to you it probably isn't. I will talk to my friend and make certain of the model and year. I am doing this for him since he doesn't do the internet.

Thanks for the help and your patience.

If it is a 755 the PTO engagement should look like what I circled in this picture. The 755 was made from 1986 to 1998 according to Tractor Data. What you describe sounds a lot more like a more modern tractor with a solenoid as opposed to the manual lever engagement found on 755's.

OK, so lets assume the model number is wrong...

I would suspect a wiring problem (short to ground) in the PTO circuit, but what I don't understand is if that is the case why is there still power to pull in the solenoid. Another possibility is the coil in the solenoid is near shorted and sucking more power than genny can make.

Yep, wrong model NO.. It's a 1985 750.
The solenoid is more like a clutch device but definitely electric as it activated by a switch rather than a lever.

The tractor was used this weekend to mow and after the first use the battery was dead but after the second use the battery was still charged. To me this seems to point to a ground problem. We discussed the possibility of installing a new wiring harness rather than trying to track down a problem in the existing harness with the changes made t bypass safety switches. Good idea?

Thanks again.

OK, things are getting clearer now! Thanks for the correct model number. it looks like a complicated system. If inspecting the complete harness does not turn up anything obvious I think I would do one of two things:

1) Have him buy the technical manual CD, it's only $50: https://techpubs.deere.com/products/ProductSearch.aspx?o=type&type=tm
You will need the proper resistance readings of the field coil and such to properly diagnose this.

2) Ask a dealer to print the test procedure for it.

Sounds like the plan.

I will give an update after we check these things.

Thanks again Kenny!
