Guys,
I’m looking to pickup a 4900 international with a DT466 single rear axle to put a flat bed on, with a gooseneck in the bed and a hitch on the back. I’ll be using it to haul seed and a forklift on the trailer. I’ll only put maybe 5000 miles on it so I’m not looking to spend a lot on the truck. Does anyone here have experience with the 4700/4900’s? I have some transmission questions as well as a few other questions.

Good afternoon Ruger,

When I worked in Public Works, we had several of these "S" series, and 4900's. Same truck, updated nomenclature.

They had the DT466's, some with a 5 speed transmission and a 2 speed rear, one with an Allison Automatic transmission, and one with an Eaton "Super Six". The 5 speed's were relatively bulletproof and easy to shift. Any problems were typically the 2 speed rears, usually wiring. We would lock them into the high side and leave them there. We had one where the shifter jammed, requiring the removal of the top plate.

The "Super Six" was a royal pain until you got used to shifting it. A 13 speed was much easier. These transmissions are fairly common in the 4900 series.

As for the DT466, there are several models, mostly horsepower ratings, anywhere from 185 HP to 260 HP(?). The higher horsepower motor is worth it. The single biggest problem we had with one of these was that the o-rings around the bottom of the cylinder sleeves rotted out on two of the sleeves, allowing coolant to get into the engine oil. We did all six holes and bearings, not much significant difference in cost for the six sleeve kit versus two single sleeve kits.

They aren't the most comfortable truck in the world, but they are fairly rugged, and would likely work well for what you are planning to do.

One of the things I learned, as these trucks were used primarily in the winter, was to run them all year long so that any maintenance problems came up duriing the summer.

It seems like most of the trucks I find so far have the 7 speed spicer manual transmission. Do you know anything about those transmissions. The fact that the 466 has wet sleeves does concern me but as long as they made them and no one else really had a cow about it I guess it’s nothing to worry about. What’s your thoughts on mechanical vs electric injection?

Ruger,

The Super Six is the Spicer 7 speed. It will make people think you can't shift to save your life until you figure it out. They shift better under load.

Regarding the mechanical/Electronic injeection issue, the S Series trucks were old enough that they had mechanical injection. I suppose the 4900 had electronic injection. My take on electronics is that when they work well, they work well. There are few parts to wear out, except for the injectors themselves. Usually a wire issue if there is a problem.
